Auto Club Off The IndyCar Schedule For 2016 Empty Auto Club Off The IndyCar Schedule For 2016

Post by BooyakaDragon Fri Aug 14, 2015 1:14 pm

Well then. http://motorsportstalk.nbcsports.com/2015/08/14/auto-club-speedway-out-for-indycar-in-2016/

More sources: http://www.racer.com/indycar/item/120272-indycar-fontana-out-for-16-phoenix-closer-to-return

"Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif. hosted arguably one of the most exciting races in recent IndyCar memory on Saturday, June 27.

It won’t have an encore for 2016.

A track spokesperson has confirmed it won’t be on the 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series schedule, unable to find a suitable date and time that works for its schedule.

INDYCAR has also confirmed the news via a statement released:

INDYCAR explored several options to retain the event as part of its 2016 calendar, including plans to race later in the season to comply with the track’s request to host the season finale. Ultimately the two sides were unable to identify a start time and broadcast window that would not adversely impact television viewership on the East Coast.

“There was a tremendous amount of effort put forth to keep Auto Club Speedway on the calendar. In the end, we could not identify a compromise for 2016 that was amicable for both parties,” said Mark Miles, CEO of Hulman & Co., the parent of INDYCAR and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. “We’re thankful to (Auto Club Speedway President) Dave Allen for his efforts in these negotiations. We mutually agreed that our inability to identify a date for next year doesn’t preclude us revisiting these conversations in the future.”

It’s a shame as Auto Club Speedway hosted some of the most exciting races in IndyCar since its return in 2012, but has also been subject to four date changes in four years.

In 2012, the race was in mid-September, then moved to mid-October for 2013, end of August for 2014 and then end of June for this year.

Auto Club had been rumored as a possible season-ender for 2016, after Boston’s race on Labor Day weekend, but that is now not the case.

It remains to be seen whether ACS – a staple of open-wheel calendars from 1997 to 2005 and from 2012 to 2015 – will have a third life with IndyCar.

The news comes as Phoenix International Raceway is closing on a possible April return, incidentally, for the first time since 2005."

Imagine if after the 2012 Wakings Glen race, they wouldn't return for 2013. It just doesn't make scene... Doesn't matter who's fault for this race not being in 2016, it's just bad PR.

Sucks...

It sucks, but quite frankly if IndyCar was never going to budge on ending the season no later than early September, they would have been better off scheduling the race in the springtime.

I guess we can only hope for Michigan to be on next year's schedule as Fontana's replacement. No Evil or Very Mad

-_-

Attendance would have most likely gone up after this year's race if IndyCar had found a suitable race date for next season. I thought that was a given.

Was it really that much trouble to keep the race scheduled for the same June weekend, or otherwise find another race date? The way I see it, there's not much excuse on the part of IndyCar for this one. So I guess that's another poorly-made decision for Brian Barnhart-era management in IndyCar, right up there with restarting a rain-delayed Loudon race without drying the track first, and the 2011 IZOD IndyCar World Championship race weekend.

Of course no one was going to show when they put in one of the worst spots on a already terrible calendar: middle of the day on a Saturday in Late June, In California. It's almost like they intentionally put it in that slot so nobody will show, and then kick it off the calendar unceremoniously. I don't mind they we're getting back Phoenix and (Giovanni) Roda America, but at what cost?

Really, dude? Did you even watch that race? A race that is considered by many to be one of the greatest IndyCar races of all time?

No one showed up for the race because the date was the worst they could've gotten. 1:30 p.m. on a Saturday in the middle of June, with super hot temperatures. The reason that fans didn't show up was because of the weather, NOT the racing.

In addition, while not a lot of people watched it live at the track, almost 600,000 people watched the race on television, which was the most viewers IndyCar had in quite some time.

The fact of the matter is, word of mouth spreads quickly, especially on the internet. If this race would've been on the schedule next year, I guarantee the stands would've been jammed packed because of the expectations of the would-be event.

Sadly, that won't happen next year. No

No. Just no. Bad pun. 0/10

Seriously though, I think it had more to do with it not being the season finale.

Yeah I watched some of it, but the point is no one showed up and the race probably lost buckets of cash, which is almost a guarantee you don't return to the schedule.

But to Packer's points, the hazy weather in Southern California was the main reason barely anyone showed up.

I saw the first third of the race, before I had to leave home due to prior commitments.

My point though had nothing to do with the racing itself, but yes, it was the best race Indy car has had in ages can't argue that.

I was trying to say, that from an economics standpoint they probably lost a lot of money with so few ticket sales and that likely accelerated the demise of that race.

I wonder though how attendance would look if Indy and California settled on running in March or April. Guarantee you, especially after the race they had this year, it would look much healthier

Auto Club Off The IndyCar Schedule For 2016 Empty Re: Auto Club Off The IndyCar Schedule For 2016

Post by SpeedDemon37 Sat Aug 15, 2015 7:38 pm

My initial reaction to this was identical to Ben's comment;

WHY?!?!?!?!?!?!?

But in seriousness, I think that IndyCar made a really poor decision in failing to come to an agreement with Auto Club Speedway, as I don't see how the track and the race promoters could be at fault for the severe lack of attendance at the race this year, and I find it hard to see how their requests were not achievable. Considering how popular the race turned out to be this year, I would honestly expect a little more effort from IndyCar to try to meet the track's what-I-consider-to-be reasonable demands rather than showing them the door.

That opinion is in regards to Auto Club Speedway's demands to be given a more suitable race date for the Fontana weather and crowds. If they really dropped ACS because the track insisted on hosting the finale, then I would personally place some blame on them, too, for not settling for a date that's better than June even if it isn't the finale. (Although personally I would personally agree with ACS and would absolutely love for a 500-miler at Fontana to close the season!)

Irregardless of why IndyCar won't return to Fontana next year, it's a huge shame that that is the case; this year's MAVTV 500 is one of my favorite IndyCar races that I have ever watched. I'm very glad that Road America and possibly other classic American open-wheel circuits may be returning next year, because losing Fontana is a huge blow to the series' schedule.

I'm gonna hold saying why it's right and wrong until the schedule is released...something is telling me different season finale that isn't Boston.

But yeah it does really suck to see a fun track like Fontana go.

Damn, that sucks. This year's race was one of the best in the last ten years. Hopefully Indycar can make some sort of deal with Michigan or Chicagoland... I can dream at least...
