Wow. Looked like something just plain broke there.

And what did the car do after nailing the wall?!? Slowed down a bit, and blew over. This is not going to be a good 500 Neutral

I know accidents happen, but it just makes me feel sick to think that in a span of 5 days we've had 4 bad crashes. Makes me worried that something even worse is probably going to happen. Sad

Can't blame you, remember this is practice, a wreck like that during race conditions where 33 cars are close to each other can lead to even worse wrecks, hopefully that doesn't happen sunday.

Christ, another big wreck in IndyCar practice. Not quite like every other wreck we've had this weekend, but the car still got air well after the initial hit. The impact is the most worrisome though, by far. God damn.

Praying for Hinchcliffe. He's a clip of the wreck; watch at your own discretion:

I'm at IMS right now and saw Hinch's wreck firsthand. Probably the scariest wreck I've seen since Vitor Meira/Matos' wreck in the 500 a few years back. It's only rumors I'm hearing, but I've heard people saying Hinch might have a possible pelvis injury.

If remotely close to true, have to think he's out of the 500. Sad

I wonder if he got struck in his leg by some part of the car? The Dallara chassis can hold up pretty well even against big impacts as Pippa's crash showed us it can stand up to some pretty wicked impacts, so I don't really see how Hinch could have gotten hurt otherwise given how the main part of the tub appeared to hold up.

From what I am reading, it is exactly that. Something punctured the tub, and got his leg

The Dallara's are tanks, there's no way just the impact alone could have hurt his leg, specially since it was an upper leg injury.

The DW12 is certainly a safe vehicle, but telemetry showed that Hinch impacted the wall somewhere in the neighborhood of 225mph. I don't care how safe your car is, that kind of force does serious damage. Remember Wilson hurt his pelvis when he was t-boned a while back at Fontana.

But, on the brighter side, let's all take a moment to appreciate the fact that a man just impacted a retaining wall at 220+, nearly head-on, and survived. That alone is incredible.

So true. 15 years ago, I can safely say we would have been saying RIP Hinch, but today?!? Still injured, but will live to race another day sometime down the road.

According to this article, had it not been for the safety team, Hinchcliffe would have perished. Fantastic job by the Indycar Safety team.

I was under the impression that the suspension of the DW12 was changed to prevent that sort of intrusion after the same thing happened to Dan Wheldon (very secondary to his head injuries).

That said, depending on the level of soft tissue damage Hinch received, he could be be looking at anything from being out for a year to his career being over. It's really going to depend on how much damage the nerves in his legs took. Here's hoping his recovery is swift and complete.

This just goes to show that no matter how safe you make race cars these days, there's always something in the air that will come down and strike even the most talented drivers out there. I'm glad Hinchcliffe is still with us, but judging by the severity of his injuries, I'm not so sure he may come back for the rest of the season let-alone the Indy 500.

Well...not to be pedantic or anything, but I'm sure it's going to be quite a while before he does any sort of walking again

Still, I know what you mean. Fantastic work by the medical team. Hinch is my favorite driver, and I can't express my gratitude enough for those brave folks who saved his life. Hopefully he'll be back in the car sooner rather than later.

An interesting read on what exactly caused the suspension failure, how they go about inspecting race parts, and the different type of parts that different teams are using right now.

Briscoe will get the job done in the 500 well enough. I just hope he isn't Hinchy's long term replacement.

I never got the love for Kathrene Legge everyone here has. To me she was an attempt by champ car to capitalize on "Danicamania", she could barely hold her own against some of the weak champ car fields they had in the final seasons, at least with Danica she could . Plus her Lower Series wins are kind of tainted when you realize her two biggest rivals were Charles Zwolsman, and everyone's favorite commie defector Toni Kasements.

She did hold her own with the TrueCar team, I'll give her that, but I still think she's overvalued massively and there's several other female drivers that are better. (Simona, Ana, etc....etc...)

Reports are that Carlos Huertas has been replaced for the Indy 500 by Tristan Vautier. An announcement is expected sometime Friday. The move would send the #18 car to the last row of the field.

Freedom 100 goes to Jack Harvey. Schmidt held a stranglehold over the top 4 spots. Our photo finish streak was broken by Ed Jones crashing with 3 to go and ending the race under yellow.

Was an alright race.

Sato forced it 3 wide, and sadly took Karam with him, Briscoe spun.

Gotta feel for Karam and Daly. 2 young talents out before it begins.

This start has been incredible pitiful for a race as big as this.

Clauson wrecked, got in the gray and pounded the wall... He's okay though!
