2015 Indianapolis 500
The month of May. Warm, nice spring weather, with summer around the corner. But also, this is IndyCar's month as the greatest racetrack in the world, called Indianapolis Motor Speedway, is the site of the fastest, most intriguing, and the most nerve wracking race of the planet, the Indianapolis 500. Since 1911, this race has tested men and women, machine and engineering, emotion and minds, and it'll be no different this year, the 99th running of this event.
Ryan Hunter-Reay denied Helio Castroneves' bid of being the fourth driver of winning this race a record 4 times to win his first in 2014. Who will be Indy 500 champ this year? The race is Sunday May 24th. Qualifying is this weekend.

Re: 2015 Indianapolis 500
Very strange coincidence in that today is the 10 year anniversary of Sam Hornish Jr. flipping in Indy 500 practice. Hornish Jr. was also driving a Team Penske car, and Helio was his teammate that year. Hornish's car hit some debris from Paul Dana's car, which caused it to spin and flip in Turn 2.

More trouble at Indy as Pippa Mann suffered a big crash late in practice, It sounds like the team is in trouble on making the 500.

Glad to hear Helio is okay...that was scary.
Pippa's accident reminds me of Kevin Cogan's, although Cogan went on the inside of the pit wall after hitting the end of it. To be fair, Kevin Cogan hit every wall at Indy at some point in his very unlucky career.
On a more positive note, Helio hit 227MPH in practice.

Those were my initial thoughts exactly. As much as we love Indy, the end of the pit road wall is in the most inconvenient spot, which is to say it's not exactly out of the way. It's gotta be one of those dangerous pit road walls in motorsports, but I can't think of a way to do it better.
Anyway, glad to hear that both Pippa Mann and Helio Castroneves are uninjured.

Re: 2015 Indianapolis 500
I've long thought that the inside wall just after turn 4 at Indy (and Daytona before they changed it) was one of the most dangerous walls in motorsports. There's no wonder Pipa hit end of the pit wall. The inside wall points right at it.
On a lighter note, Helio could've medal'd at the X Games with that 3/4 backflip, 1/2 side flip he did, lol

About the only logical thing I can think of is building the wall to about halfway through Turn 4 (while leaving plenty of room for an apron and what not), of course, that means pit road would be an ungodly length.

The cars should not be flipping like this. It's really unusual to see the cars flip this frequently.

Almost identical to Helio.
I hope to god no one gets cheese grated against the fence, because if they don't find a way to keep these cars grounded while spinning, that's going to happen

Copy-pasting my Facebook post to here:
Here's one thing I don't understand. Three straight years IndyCar ran the normal DW12 body from 2012 to 2014 and we didn't have a single flip let-alone a blowover. Now two days in a row with the first time these new Aerokits on an oval we've already had two flips with a big hit and a blowover. This is genuinely concerning leading up to the 500 because I'm worried these crash may lead to something even worse.

This is exactly what I was thinking. We had phenomenal races for the last 3 years with the DW12 without the aerokits. The series should consider about getting rid of them for the superspeedways because 4 incidents like those before qualifying has me concerned.

Re: 2015 Indianapolis 500
Why is everyone freaking out over Newgaarden? The flip was 0% aero and 100% weight-shift.
Ed Carpenter had an identical wreck in 2012....
Only difference is Ed hit faster and thus the G-forces pinned the car up against the wall instead of blowing it over.

^ This. Newgarden's car was on the ground all the way to the wall, and the impact lifted the back end allowing air to get underneath. That could have easily happened any other year.
Anyway, I'm not sure why people are so surprised at this. If an aerodynamically-dependant open-wheel race car travels backwards at 200+ mph, it flips. That's been known for a long time.

It's not 100% weight shift then if the air still picked up Newgarden's car.

No, there might have been some weight shift, but the car going over like that was mostly aero.

In other IndyCar news, a new team called Grace Autosport has launched targeting Indy in 2016 as their debut race. The team's goal is to promote women in racing and automotive engineering, and their driver will be Katherine Legge. The team principal is a woman named Beth Panetta, who is the former racing director for SRT Motorsports in the ALMS and in IMSA.

Re: 2015 Indianapolis 500
The first day of Indy 500 qualifying has been postponed due to rain. The second day schedule has been revised as follows.
10:00 AM - 1:00 PM - All 34 cars will make one qualifying attempt.
1:45 PM - 2:30 PM - The nine fastest cars will take part in the Firestone Fast Nine to determine the pole sitter. Each car gets one attempt.
3:00 PM - 3:45 PM - The cars in positions 31-34 will each make attempt to determine the final three positions on the grid. Multiple attempts will be allowed if there is time at the end.
In addition, the runs of Ryan Hunter-Reay and Carlos Huertas that were completed today have been thrown out, so there will be no unfair advantage because of track conditions.

I made a quick little video showing Carpenter's crashes from 2012 and 2015 side by side. It's interesting to see the similarities and differences.

A little bit of weight shift, but without the aerodynamics, that would not have flipped the car. Someone is seriously going to end up flipping it badly

Was supposed to be the last day before they slowed the cars down i believe, that's kinda like Newgarden's crash where it lost the sidepod and got turned over.

It hardly matters which aerokit cars have, once air gets underneath a single seater it will act like an aeroplane.

This. And the fact they are thinking about slowing the cars down... I said it years back with Las Vegas, and I'll say it here, anything that could bunch the cars up, ESPECIALLY with the possibility of cars flying, is just asking for someone to get seriously injured, if not killed in these cars, regardless of what safety advances they put in these cars.

Re: 2015 Indianapolis 500
Marshall Pruett of Racer.com on what were looking at for qualifying.
Engines will return to their low-boost settings, which reduces something in the region of 40-50hp and lowers lap speeds below 230mph.
All teams--from Chevy and Honda--will be required to race in the aerodynamic trim they use in qualifying. This effectively forces teams to abandon low-drag qualifying setups.
Teams are allowed to adjust their wing angles as desired.
Wing wickers are also open.

Heard that Ed Carpenter went over in Indy 500 practice. Luckily he's okay, but it goes to show that these aero packages are terrible. Say what you will; I still think that's part of the issue.
