- Rookies-Only Race:
- 9th-Place Debut for Fochesato in Rookies-Only Race @ Toddring
The opening race of the renamed and revamped Dash Cup Pirelli Super Touring Series took place earlier today, commencing a new era for the international auto racing series that was formed in 1999. The pre-season exhibition known as the Rookies-Only Race was the first event for the series' new touring car chassis, consisting of 18 newcomers to this year's lineup of drivers racing for 8 laps around the enormous full layout of the Toddring in Carlisle, England.
Among the new faces on the starting grid was Vincenzo Fochesato, the 22-year-old Italian stock car racer. Having competed for FIAM Engineering in TM Master Cup Series special events for the past two years, the Italian operation has provided him with a full-time ride for this year's Dash Cup PSTS title. Driving the #75 FIAM CinqueTC, he will be joining 2014 Mallory Park GP race 3-winner Giuseppe Marchetti and fellow rookie Mireille Allain to complete the team's 2015 driver lineup.
Fochesato drew the fourth starting position alongside his teammate Allain, but the two made contact in the third turn on the opening lap, sending Allain's #14 car off the track and into Amber Clagett's #5. Receiving no major damage, Fochesato continued on, but overdrove turn 3 on the next lap and cut off the #4 of Dino Venneri while rejoining the track, getting struck in the rear bumper and nearly losing control. The incident knocked the #75 car all the way back to the 15th position, and he spent the remaining 6 laps hitting his marks and regaining lost ground. By the time the checkered flag flew, Fochesato was scored as the 9th finisher.
"That was certainly a learning experience!" said Fochesato in the garage with a chuckle after the race. "My CinqueTC felt really comfortable and really fast, but I guess that I beat up some other cars while trying to use it. I feel terrible that of all of the other drivers, the one that I wrecked was my teammate! That was a complete accident and I'm really sorry to Mireille [Allain] for taking away her chance to do anything in the race. I was on the outside of turn 3 and I wasn't expecting her to clear me before I got back on the throttle and hit her car. That was definitely a silly mistake on my part and it's a huge shame that she had to pay for it. And then I messed up turn 3 again when I got on the throttle too early and found the grass. I'm sorry to the Simonet crew for almost wrecking Venneri, too; I misjudged his speed when I rejoined the track. I'm glad that I didn't cause any more damage."
Despite the messy start, Fochesato still claims to have felt very comfortable behind the wheel of a touring car. "I think that this was a great race for my first try in a touring car, and that just shows how great of a job that FIAM Engineering has done to help prepare me for this race. And I absolutely love this racetrack! I knew that I was going to be missing the high-banks of ovals, but the Toddring is so flowing, fast, and I almost feel at home on the banking! I'm definitely excited that we've got three more races to run here on Sunday!"
This isn't the first time that Fochesato has taken part in an opening race for an overhauled major series. He has lived with his family in the United States for the majority of his life, and has spent the previous two years racing in the FARC Truck Series. He also has started 20 FARC Elite Series races over the course of the past three years, which includes the 2014 Apex Racing School Rookie Shootout exhibition; the first event for the Falkner Auto Racing Championships following the merger between ARLA and FARCE. Dash Cup's organizing of a rookie-exclusive exhibition is heavily based upon the FARC race that has been run annually 2009. Fochesato is the only driver to have taken part in the first races of both FARC and the Dash Cup Super Touring Series.
Fochesato and his team will be racing once again in the triple-race opening round of the Dash Cup Pirelli Super Touring Series in two days.
