2015 Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona

Post by Alta on Mon Jan 19, 2015 2:37 am

As we have come to know as fans of motorsports the winter time has been always been a time of no racing/no fun. (well with Formula E now it's scarce rather than none) But at the same time it makes the hunger for our loveable racing cars to come back much more stronger when the new year comes, and as we get into the dying days of January the party is about to get kicked off once again...But before it kicks into high gear the racing season likes to give us a little sample of the cake...A pre-show more less, and what better way to get in the motorsports season mood then a cake that lasts 24 hours! I'm talking about America's grand 24 hour sport car race The Rolex 24 at the Daytona International Speedway presented by the TUDOR's United Sportscar Series/IMSA.

Last year's had it's moments of good and bad, Good as in the the closing battle in the GTD class between the Level 5 Motorsports Ferrari driving by Alessandro Pier Guidi and the Flying Lizard Audi driven by legendary European GP race leader in 2007 leader Markus Winkelhock in which it was ended by a wild side by side move that ended in the grass which gave the win to Level 5. Good for the Action Express tag team of the final boss of 2000's Champ Car Sebastian Bourdias, Joao Barbosa, and Former Champ Car/We don't talk about his NASCAR career Christian Fittipaldi who took the victory in last year's race and with the same tag team back again for another war with the 24 can they do it again? The bad side of this last year had the horrifying crash with the  GTLM Risi Competizione Ferrari driven by Matteo Malucelli and the Gainsco/Bob Stallings Racing DP driven by Memo Gidley in which the faster DP slammed into almost stalled GT car ending in one of biggest frontal impacts that we've seen in racing for years. Gidley has not raced since the accident and is still recovering from the accident but recent reports have said he will be able to get in a race car again sometime in the future. Matteo Malucelli is currently not entered for the Rolex 24.

Who knows what wild moments and crazy stuff we'll see this year? Will we see another neck and neck battle? Will we see a surprise team come up in the win race? Will we see the 3 hour fog full course cautions that we've come to see in the morning hours? Who Knows!

For the Americans watching the race the schedule for where the race is airing goes like this.

From 2:00 to 4:00 PM EST will be on the main FOX channel
From 4:00 to 8:00 PM EST will be on Fox Sports 2
From 8:00 to 10 PM EST will be on Fox Sports 1
From 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM will be IMSA.com with live video stream and live commentary courtesy of Radio Le Mans
From 7:00 AM to the finish of the race will be on Fox Sports 1

Also for people looking for potential fun in the late night hours/the race from a team's perspective the GTD Magnus Racing team has streamed the race from their perspective the last few years although it is not confirmed if they will be doing it again this year at this time.

Entry List: (Courtesy of IMSA.Com): http://www.imsa.com/sites/default/files/races/entry_lists/2015%20TUDOR%20Championship%20ROLEX%20Pre-Event%20Entry%20List_1.pdf

The #16 BAR1 Motorsports team includes guy that's show up in Nascar every now and again "Hollywood" Tomy Drissi and Indycar driver "The Plow" Martin Plowman
The #54 Core Autosport team which won in class last year has Former Nascar driver Colin Braun
For whatever reason the #61 BAR1 Motorsports has Martin Plowman listed in twice so i don't know if that's a mistake or Plowman is trying to combine the cars to make some sort of Transformer Autobot thing, but i guess we should believe in the Plowman who believes in you.

GTLM

The All-American Corvette tag team of cars has in the #3 Corvette has well known Danish driver and father of at this time of a former f1 driver, Jan Magnussen as well as Australian driver and looking for a ride in Indycar right now Ryan Briscoe
The #4 Corvette has French Indycar driver Simon Pagenaud in helms of that team
#24 BMW team has son of Bobby Rahal and current (Bobby...why?) Indycar driver Graham Rahal.
The #62 Risi Competizione team has "I'm not that David Ragan" and former GP2 driver Davide Rigon and Former F1 driver and #2 driver champion Giancarlo Fischella.
#98 Aston Martin Racing team has former F1 driver Pedro Lamy and Son of former F1 driver and current Nascar Europe driver Mathias Lauda
The winning #911 Porsche North America team is back with it's previous line-up of Nick "Space" Tandy, and Patrick Pilet, however the "newbie" in the folds is Marc Lieb.

GTD:

The #22 Alex Job Racing/Half-Life 3 confirmed team has Australian V8 Supercar driver and still looking for that soup from the 2014 race in Shane Van Gisbergen
The #44 Magnus Racing team has Former Nascar driver Andy Lally on the team. (If Magnus does the stream again you'll probably get to chat with Lally and more)
Everyone's favorite driver Markus Winkelhock is spyked back into the the #45 Flying Lizard team
#58 Wright Motorsports team has former Champ Car driver Jan Haylen and the actor dude Patrick Dempsey
The #63 Scuderia Corsa team has one-off Indy 500 driver Townsend Bell and former Nascar driver Anthony Lazzaro going into battle
The #81 GB Autosport team has Sports Car Driver and holder of the Attack Girlfriend Mike Skeen ready to slap up the competiton
#97 Turner Motorsport has well-known sports car driver/Nascar road ringer...Wait who said that? Oh! Boris Said that.
#007 Aston Martin team wraps it with Australian driver and Indy 500 entry last year James Davison
The Level 5 Motorsports team that won last year will not return to this race.

And there you have it...Let's start the racing season boys!

"Australian V8's driver and Indy 500 entry last year James Davison"

James has never done V8 Supercars, but is cousins to Will and Alex Davison.

I've really started to enjoy sports car racing more and more over the last couple of years. I'm very much anticipating this race to kick off the new year! (Especially since I lost the last 5 hours of last year's Petit Le Mans - the last race that the TUSCC has run - in a DVR mishap.)

Some other notables

* The Ganassi team ran second and third.
* The defending winners of the race, The AER #5 was 4th.
* The DeltaWing was fifth.
* A seriously amateur-ish Ohio effort called RG Racing (driven by businessman Mark Kvamme, who if I'm not mistaken was appointed to an economic development board by Governor John Kasich in the not too distant past) qualified 11th, and outpaced a few Pro cars.
* The Kings of LMPC, CORE Autosport came second in class.
* The Vettes set a new track record.
* Porsche had a disasterous run in GTLM, coming in 8th, 9th, and 10th.
* The #009 Aston, which included former F1 driver Eliseo Salazar as an "amateur", did not set a time. The GB Autosport #81 and the Extreme Speed Motorsports #1 Honda prototype did not either.

Apparently, from what I watched in their Stream, Andy Lally was driving normally and suddenly the possum swerved into the track, and Lally didn't even knew.

Not sure why, but seeing who the driver was at the time (Francisco Longo), I wouldn't be surprised if it was by major idiocy.

The #44 had a ton of smoke pouring out at around the same time, it might've been oil but I haven't heard for sure. If it was then that was probably it.
