McLaren have decided which driver they're keeping...

Post by Ben Atkins on Wed Dec 10, 2014 7:53 pm

Jenson Button IS returning after all!!!!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/formula1/30328327

Personally, I'm really happy for Jenson, but I feel absolutely terrible for Magnussen, but all in all, I think McLaren kept the better driver...

Can this gimmick of canning another driver after one year to keep Button at McLaren stop? :/

Really sucks for Magnussen and it seems like no one is going to take him.

Plus Button did donuts at Abu Dhabi for show now in hindsight, couple years ago that would've been a pretty interesting penalty.

I'm more inclined to think they canned Magnussen to give Alonso a ride... for some reason.

I kind of figured they were gonna have Alonso as the strong one and Magnussen as the obvious #2...But I guess it's Button.

Maybe it's just me but does anyone else automatically think when teams stack two big guns (Yes i know Button has been quiet in the past few years but he is a champion) on a team that somebody getting the lesser of the equipment feels like they're being held back and that a development guy at the time makes more sense. (Speaking of which does this make any sense? lol)

If I were a young driver, Force India would be a better option right now than McLaren.

Really dissapointed that Magnussen got dumped. It's the same deal with Sergio Perez last year, and now they're done it again. Where the hell is he going to go now? There's hardly any rides available for him now.

I'm not believing anything either way until the announcement is officially made. Andrew Benson is a hack.

What young driver will want to go to McLaren at this rate?!? Sure, they can point to Lewis Hamilton, but that's the last two now they dumped. Granted, getting Fernando Alonso (back) on the team is a good choice, but still, to dump a guy before he can fully blossom?!?

^^They haven't dumped him, kept him as a reserve.

To be fair, Button did significantly better.

Button is better, and Alonso is MUCH better than Kevin.

Champion vs. Rookie. Of course Button was going to beat him this year.

Unless something tragic happens to Button or Alonso, you might as well say he got dumped

And to be fair, Ralf Schumacher is significantly better again.

Oh wait, but that's not how it works, because although Ralf hammered Button back in Button's rookie year, any point after 2003, 2005 at the latest, you would've hired Button instead.

McLaren aren't going to be title contenders in 2015, they have relatively little to gain by having Button on board as opposed to letting Magnussen continue to develop and settle in with the team. If they need someone to develop the car, they have the best racing driver in the world in the other car.

I would hope that McLaren would allow Kevin Magnussen to race somewhere in 2015, perhaps in sportscars or some form of open wheel. The Honda connection could help him...they have connections in the WEC, IndyCar, and IMSA, so he could find a ride there. He's probably going to just be a reserve driver though, which is unfortunate. Button is an immensely talented driver, and I would imagine that he and Fernando Alonso could both contend for wins if the car is good.
