NASCAR @ Homestead

Post by BWard on Tue Nov 11, 2014 10:27 am

Well, this is it. We have finally come to the conclusion of the 2014 NASCAR Season of the Sprint Cup, Nationwide and Trucks at the Homestead Speedway in Miami, Florida. As far as the Trucks Points Standings are concerned, Matt Crafton has a comfortable 25 point lead over Ryan Blaney, so as long as Crafton stays out of trouble, he will win the Truck Championship for the 2nd year in a row. For the Nationwide Series though, the championship has already been locked up by Chase Elliott.

In the Sprint Cup title Race though, there are 4 drivers who are looking for their first Cup Championship. Them being Kevin Harvick, Joey Logano, Ryan Newman and Denny Hamlin. I don't like the system, and I'm sure not really anyone else here does, but it is what it is. Who will pull out of Homestead as the new NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion? We shall soon find out this Sunday.

With a somewhat big field there is still room for Blaney to take it if Crafton screw up.

Alright, my favourite driver could actually win a championship for once. I... I don't know what to do. The last time this happened was 2011 and I wasn't mentally prepared for that.

Any Johnson/Martin/Edwards/Hamlin/Harvick/Keselowski/Kenseth/Gordon/JEEEENNNNYYYEEEERRRR Fans know what to do?

I'm not a Newman fan, but he's a good driver, and he has been consistent in the Chase, but if he wins the championship without a single win, no question NASCAR has some explaining to do as to how emphasizing on winning races is a way to win championships when one driver can still prevail on consistency.

I hate Hamlin after his crap with Logano last year. But he deserves to be in the final four at this rate. The same with Logano, but he's having a better season that JGR combined, which is kinda funny to me.

I like Harvick a lot, but there's another side of me saying I don't want him to win the title after that egregious, childish crap he pulled at Texas.

And Congratulations to Chase on winning the NNS title last week. This kid is ready for the big time.

As one may expect, I am cheering for Newman to get the championship this year as I am not sure the opportunity will arise for him again. Although, I'd be okay with anyone winning because none of them have ever won a championship.

Smart Reasonable move by him though, at least from a PR point-of-view. Trying to get out "in front of the issue" if Newman does happen to win.

Not like it's actually working, but, hey, good attempt.

I swore Ryan Blaney's title hopes were over when he had that problem with the shifter. Then he went from 30th to 9th on that restart.

Not a bad race so far I don't suppose, but I tuned in late and like half the yellows this race have been for debris...

Good win, Matt Kenseth, though I might appreciate that win more if it were the Cup win that he still doesn't have this year. But more importantly, congratulations Chase Elliott! The right side of his car probably didn't look so good when he was burning it down after the race. Wink

No matter what happens tomorrow in the Cup race, I don't really care who gets the title. No matter what we'd have a new champion. I'll be pulling for Newman and Harvick, but my better judgment suggests Harvick will have the best shot. That is, if he doesn't have a catastrophic failure that's already plagued him so often this season.

Regardless, this Chase format still sucks. That goes without saying.

I think Hamlin winning would be a slightly bigger F U to NASCAR then Newman winning. But I just want either to win if possible.

...and Harvick is your champion of one race... yaaay...

I honestly slept through the first half of the race because I figured NASCAR would throw a debris yellow under 30 to go. Would have been nicer if he won the title without a gimmick.

GC Harvick. That was a pretty epic race overall in my opinion.

I can't wait to see how much of a spike in ratings there wasn't. If Newman couldn't win it, at least Harvick did.

Gutted for Newman. But honestly he drove it in way harder than he should have. Nevertheless, it's all ogre. The Neckoning will not happen.

Still psyched for Harvick. Say what you will, I think he's a great guy.

I'd be all for Harvick winning if it wasn't for that classless shit he pulled in Charlotte.

The race was pretty good, although the number of cautions was pretty irritating, to say the least.

Honestly, I didn't give a crap who won the championship, because I really didn't have any interest in any of the four drivers. And I'll be honest. I lost a lot of respect for Harvick after Texas, but I'll give him credit where credit is due. He went out and won the championship, even though it has been diluted with everything that has gone on thanks to this garbage format, although that isn't his fault.

Newman, actually being relevant for once, it came at the very end of the season, and he damn near pulled it off. I don't find the guy to be very interesting, but he put on one helluva show tonight.

Too bad for Whamlin and Lolgano. Better luck next year, boys.

Overall, the Ford 400 @ Homestead gets a solid 6.0/10. The 2014 season as a whole also gets a solid 6.0/10. There was a LOT more good racing this year than in the last three years combined, IMO. Unfortunately, it got offset a bit by this Godforsaken championship format, and we're probably gonna be stuck with it for a long time to come. Otherwise, this season probably would've gotten a higher rating.

Let's hope for more good racing next season, and hopefully, by some miracle, the Chase will be axed.
