Racing Trivia/Quiz

Post by Alpineopossum on Tue Sep 02, 2014 11:05 am

I saw a post on the Did You Know thread that had a trivia quiz and I think that kind of thing deserves its own thread. So I'll start this off with a few questions.

1. One of the pioneering female racing drivers once co-drove a car with someone related to a woman who broke a very different glass ceiling. Who were the two drivers involved and who was the famous female relative?

2. What is the origin of British Racing Green?

3. On only one occasion in F1 history has the factory Ferrari team run a livery in which no major part of the car was painted Red. What was the race and why was the color scheme different?

I don't know question 1, but I do know 3 and will take a stab at 2.

2) The Gordon Bennett Cup in the early 20th Century mandated that each entrant would have their country's colours on the car. With the British red, white and blue already taken, the Brits took green as it was a common colour on train locomotives at the time and because it was the national colour of Ireland, where the Cup was held in 1902 in place of Britain, where motor racing was illegal.

3) I believe it was both North American rounds of the 1964 season (if I have to pick one, I'll say Mexico). I seem to remember it was something about a prize money dispute. In any case, the works team adopted the customer NART livery of blue and white.

You might be thinking of the privateer Ecurie Nationale Belge. They used yellow and often entered Ferraris, but they weren't the works team.
