What was the weirdest race you've ever seen.
Just a tip. I would like it if it was available on Youtube. Or on another video site.

2011 NNS Road America - Mainly because of the results.
2012 Daytona 500 - Rain and fire basically.
2002 NNS Talladega - 30+ car involved in one wreck.
2005 Sprint Cup Talladega Fall - 2 big ones

I might put more up in the future.

2013 Coca Cola 600. That race went from HURR to DURR in between each half.

2011 Canadian Grand Prix - Was great but also weird at the same time, mainly because the weather played a big part in the Race.
2014 Coke Zero 400 - Race postponed a day, threatening weather on Race day, 2 big ones, Kyle Busch rolls on to his roof, and the Race eventually gets stopped for good due to rain.
2013 Indy 500 - It was a great race, but weird for me because it was so hard to predict who would win because of the amount of lead changes there were that race.

The Nationwide race in Montreal when Danica had it all but won and ran over a shoe someone threw onto the track comes to mind. Damned if I could remember when it was, but that had to be one of the weirder things I've ever seen at a race.

Oh, and JPM smashing into the jet dryer would count too, I suppose.

2000 CART Fontana - At least 5 or 6 cars at the finish.
2013 IndyCar Fontana - Same as 2000 CART race, but 8 cars finished. Great race though.
2014 Sprint Cup Fontana - Fontana actually put up a great NASCAR race for once. Tires were being shredded.
2011 IndyCar New Hampshire - How the officials failed that one.
2005 Coca-Cola 600 - Yellow fever all over that race.
2008 Brickyard 400 - Tires were being shredded.
2008 NNS Montreal - Rain pretty much threw a curveball at everyone except Ron Fellows.
2009 NCWTS at Kansas - Weather couldn't stop half the time
2005 United States Grand Prix - Self-explanatory
2014 IndyCar GP of Indianapolis - Kinda like the race of pain
2014 Coke Zero 400 - Big names crash, midfielders battling for the win before more rains came.

1998 Cup and Busch Texas - Water seepage in turn 2 was the cause for most of the wrecks that day.

The infamous 2005 United States Grand Prix

2003 Brazilian GP - The final podium results had to be determined on a court case.

1996 Monaco GP - only three cars left running at the end

1991 Australian Grand Prix - When it's too wet even for Senna.
1998 Belgian Grand Prix - The start crash, Schumacher vs Coulthard and a Jordan 1-2.
1999 European Grand Prix - Two Stewarts and a Prost on the podium. A race where Badoer had a chance to finish on the podium before...yeah.
2003 Brazilian GP
2005 San Marino Grand Prix - Remember it for the Button/Sato DSQ post-race.
2005 US GP

2005 US GP - Bridgestone won the Race.
2003 Brazilian GP - Fisichella was declared the winner, about 2 weeks after the Race had finished.
2009 Aaron's 499 - That finish left me speechless.
2006 Bathurst 1000 - Race full of Safety Cars, Paul Radisich's Big crash, Jason Richards flying through the Chase, but in the end Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup came out the champions for that years Race.
2014 Auto Club 400 - The amount of tire failures which occurred during that Race was absolutely out of control.
2007 Japanese GP - An absolute washout of a Race, Mark Webber throws up in the cockpit, and later gets crashed out by Sebastian Vettel during a Safety Car period.

2010 Sydney 500 Race 1 - The top 3 in the championship and the race both wreck because of rain. Johnathon Webb wins, his only career win.

2003 Sandown 500 - Hail hits the track in the middle of the race, cars can't even drive under safety car. Nearly produced one of the greatest upset victories of all time, when the race came down to the factory-backed HRT of Mark Skaife vs. the Privateer team of rookie Jason Richards.

2007 Bathurst 1000 - Probably the greatest Great Race ever. All hell breaks loose with under 15 laps to go as the race leader nearly rolls over, and 3 of the best crash in the same corner

2005 Bathurst 1000 - Ambrose got penalised for not having a balaclava, which took him out of the lead, and put him mid-pack with his best friend Greg Murphy. The rest is history. The finish was a repeat of the 2003 Sandown 500, again coming down to Skaife vs. Richards.

1992 Bathurst 1000 - Massive storm hits the track late, where pretty much every car hit the wall at least once. The leader Jim Richards crashed twice on one lap, but the race was declared, and results went back one lap, thus giving a destroyed car the win.

2002 Aaron's 312 - Massive wreck takes out 30 cars on the 12th lap of the race and turns into a race of Jason Keller vs the backmarkers
2014 Auto Club 400 - The tire failures were all over the place and went bonkers coming towards the end
2
2002 Honda Indy 300 - Torrential rain reigns havoc cause one of the more frightening wrecks of Champ car in the 2000's with about 2 or 3 cars rolling. Most of the rest of the race is ran under yellow and Mario Dominguez who was collecting in the first wreck ends up winning the race.
2014 Coke Zero 400 - The mid-fielders/backmarker dominate a pretty good portion of the race with two large wrecks and Aric Almirola winning

1995 Indianapolis 500 -- After largely dominating the scene at Indy for the past 15 years, Penske failed to qualify a single car. It's also the only time in the history of the race that the reigning Indy 500 champion (Al Unser, Jr) attempted to qualify but failed to make it into the field. Villeneuve got a 2 lap penalty, overcame it, and won the race.

2002 CART @ Surfer's Paradise -- Nearly the whole race under yellow due to rain. The initial start saw one of the scariest crashes I've ever seen. The race was restarted, and teams got out their spare cars. Mario Dominguez won the race because he was running last, pitted VERY early, and then cycled his way to the front.

2005 Formula 1 US Grand Prix -- If you know the story of this race, no explanation is required.

1982 Formula 1 San Marino Grand Prix -- Same as the above, really.

1984 Formula 1 Dallas Grand Prix -- The track was falling apart during the race. The track was falling apart during the race.

2003 Formula 1 Brazilian Grand Prix -- Jordan won. In 2003. That was probably the least odd thing that happened.

1994 CART Michigan 500 -- King Racing hadn't run well all season long. In fact, they were so bad that they probably killed Scott Goodyear's CART career. Michigan was a track notorious for huge numbers of mechanical DNFs, so King Racing intentionally detuned their engine and hoped they'd sneak in points. Well, the race had OBSCENE attrition, with Al Unser, Jr. and Raul Boesel running away with it, with the rest of the field either many laps down or out. Boesel blew up, Little Al then blew up shortly thereafter, and Goodyear picked up the lead. Dominic Dobson was third, Hiro Matsushita finished 6th, 11 laps down, and 11th place Marco Greco finished behind three cars (Boesel, Unser Jr, and Fittipaldi) that blew up! The most normal thing that happened here was that the Hondas blew up within the first 30 laps and were the first retirements.

2000 CART @ Fontana -- Much the same as the above. Engines were (literally) exploding like hand grenades. Casey Mears came home 4th in his CART debut driving a third car for Team Rahal.

1992 Indianapolis 500 -- Cold weather threw the entire field a curveball, resulting in lots of accidents due to cold tires... pole-sitter Roberto Guerrero wrecked on the pace lap. The race was a smashfest, with many other cars also suffering mechanical problems. It was also the last Indy 500 for both A.J. Foyt and Rick Mears, and it was the closest Indy 500 finish ever.

1992 Bathurst 1000 -- A destroyed car won.

2011 Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix -- Jenson Button won because he made 6 pit stops. Yes, you did read that correctly.

1999 Formula 1 European Grand Prix -- Luca Badoer nearly got on the podium.

1988 CART @ Long Beach -- Kevin Cogan got a podium with the Machinists Union car. I am going to spotlight that drive on IndyCARTforever. Seriously, WHAT?!

1990 CART @ Milwaukee -- How many times have you seen a car get spun at Milwaukee and then come back to win? How many times have you seen the leader at Milwaukee run out of fuel on the last lap? Little Al had a good day.

1989 Formula 1 US Grand Prix -- Rial got 4th. Says enough.

2001 CART @ Toronto -- The amount of big junk is off the scale.

1996 Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix -- Ditto.

2008 Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix -- Vettel was kind of lucky Bourdais's steering wheel conked out on the start, otherwise Bourdais might have beaten him. Toro Rosso kind of came out of nowhere and blew everyone away.

Weirdest race ever Empty Re: Weirdest race ever

1999 Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix - Both Stewarts go up in smoke on the grid after the formation lap, with Rubens Barrichello getting the backup car, and Johnny Herbert becoming the first retirement of the season without even completing a lap. Then at the start of the second formation lap, Michael Schumacher's engine stalls when his gearbox suddenly shifts out of neutral, and he's forced to start in the back. Meanwhile, Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard were making it look as if they were going to stomp the field in this race for the second straight year, until Coulthard retires with a transmission failure, then Hakkinen coughs up the lead to Eddie Irvine when his throttle forces him out. Alex Zanardi brings out the Safety Car when he crashes out in his return to Formula 1. The headway M. Schumacher makes is halted when he suffers a puncture that damages his front wing, forcing Ferrari to give him Irvine's spare nosecone. Meanwhile, Irvine goes on to win. Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Ralf Schumacher round out the podium, Giancarlo Fisichella finishes fourth, Barrichello fifth in the Stewart backup, and Pedro de la Rosa grabs the last point in the Arrows in his F1 debut - the only point he scored all year.

Come to think of it, the entire 1999 Formula 1 season was weird. A good weird.

The 1981 "South African Grand Prix" can also be added. Initially a world championship event, later became essentially a "non-championship" event with all the major manufacturers sitting out. In reality, the event was no more than a Formula Libre race as all cars were not run to F1 rules with most teams using banned parts.

Of the ones I watched...

1998 Belgian Grand Prix - Seeing a crash the magnitude that NASCAR would see was something else in F1, more amazing that no one was seriously hurt, then Michael Schumacher plowing into David Coulthard because Coulthard couldn't/didn't get out of the racing line, then racing back to the pits on three wheels

2002 Aarons 312 - Then there is this. 3 cars on the lead lap at the finish?!? A decal blowing off someone's hood?!? Blow a motor, and STILL get a top 10 finish?!?

Weirdest race ever Empty Re: Weirdest race ever

Post by gone-sovereign Fri Aug 22, 2014 9:44 pm

I guess I'll throw a few more in, although I think some of these have already been noted.

2014 Daytona II Race Weekend - I don't think just mentioning the Coke Zero 400 from this year does the entire race weekend justice. There's a whole list of things that could be said for it.

2012 Daytona 500 - How many race car drivers does it take to destroy a jet dryer? Just Juan. Huehuehue.

2012 Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200 - The race where everyone collectively ran out of fuel on the last lap out of Turn 4, and then ran out of talent after the race was already over for what had been pretty much a clean race. And of course, GERHARTWINSLOL.

2010 AAA Texas 500 - Kyle Busch shows the officials his middle finger and loses two laps on pit road, Jeff Gordon and Jeff Burton take each other out under yellow, and then subsequently throw down on the backstretch, and then Chad Knaus gets upset with his own team and brings in Gordon's pit crew to service the #48 car.

2007 Coca-Cola 600 - Bigdc48 had mentioned the 2005 race having had caution fever, and this one did as well, though not as badly. There was quite a number of bad accidents, and at the end of the race, the Top 5 consisted of Casey Mears, J.J. Yeley, Kyle Petty, Reed Sorenson and Brian Vickers, all because of fuel mileage.

And a couple more from the history books:

1973 Indianapolis 500 - Miserable weather and two very bad accidents (including a driver fatality and a crewman fatality) over the course of three days give Gordon Johncock his first Indianapolis 500 win.

There's also an unnamed race at Asheville-Weaverville Speedway in 1956 that was so crash-filled that only one car finished, obviously the race winner, who was in this case, Curtis Turner.

I think I should also elaborate a little more on why I thought that the 2013 Coca-Cola 600 was a weird race: You had a FOX cable fall onto the track during a green flag run, and do some considerable damage to several cars, and then the last half of the race became havoc for what had been an otherwise calm race. There was also the birth of a legend during that race -- the legend of the Boxing Hula-Hoop Man! Very Happy
