July Daytona Weekend 2014

Post by BBoy on Tue Jul 01, 2014 2:39 am

We're back to where we started, the Daytona International Speedway, for the always intense 4th of July weekend. When we left Daytona in February, Dale Earnhardt Jr. was on cloud 9, with his Nationwide team scoring the win in the 300 with Regan Smith, and Jr. himself scoring his 2nd Daytona 500 win. Can Dale Jr. and his Nationwide team provide the same results this time around?

Both races consist of 44 entries.

Turns out that the 33 Cup car is Brian Scott's rebuilt Talladega car.

Matt DiBenedetto may replace Jeffrey Earnhardt for the Nationwide race after Jeffrey broke his collarbone in a motorcycle accident earlier this week.

Big one in Nationwide Q involving about 10 cars. Caused by a sudden downpour on the track.

Introducing timed group qualifying was a great idea, but for the restrictor plate races, they should split the cars into two separate groups for the first round, like the cars that finished in odd-numbered spots in practice going together, and the evens in the other group. Or, do what CART used to do, and have the slowest half of the field from practice go out first, followed by the fastest half. Also, cut the first round down to 20 minutes, max.

I saw the thing on my facebook feed about the wreck in practice, and was about ready to rip NASCAR to shreds in concern about that, but after watching the video... wow. If anybody wants to question the crazy nature of rain showers in Florida during the summer, show them that video.

If there's a "best possible weekend" for a backmarker to take their maiden win, it's this one. Three potential first time winners, and a potential career-extender (as if he isn't extending his career by driving for backmarker teams) win for Boobie Laboobie.

That was sudden.

Barney Hall has been working for MRN since the first race they ever broadcasted. I think this was overdue, but nevertheless it's going to be sad to see him go and hard to get used to anyone taking his place.

Looking at the radar... do they expect to run at all tonight?!?

Edit: I was also going to make a post about how this is why Talladega now runs in the Fall instead of the Summer, but I'm looking at the races at Daytona in the past...

1. The Daytona 500 had TWO rain shortened races before the Firecracker/Pepsi/Coke 250/400 had it's first rain shortened race (1965 and 1966 compared to 1996)

2. The 500 has had 4 rain shortened races to the 250/400's 1

So much for slamming on that  Laughing

Last year's Coke Zero 400 is on. I can imagine if people were to congratulate Jimmie Johnson for winning tonight's race, but it was last year's, like the Daytona 500 earlier this year. That was hysterical.  Laughing

Tires would never handle the heat and forces put on them.  It would literally rip the tread from the tires.  If you could invent a way to stop that, be my guest.

Some people have bad damage, and like I said, the grass is going to be the death of many cars. Harvick and Stewart helped confirm my suspicions of that one.

There's your stupid wreck for the day.

I don't know what was worse -- the wreck or the fact that our second guaranteed caution Michael Waltrip is still in the field.

EDIT: And now Landon Cassill is leading this race. This is just making my day. Very Happy
