2014 ASCC Silly Season Thread

Cynon wrote:You are more than encouraged to post your own rumors, even if they have absolutely no factual basis! Remember, if I don't know you have a driver that wants in, they won't get in! The ASCC minimum driver age is 18. Drivers who are U.S. military veterans will carry a special decal, but I don't expect too many of those, so don't worry about it. I would prefer American drivers only, since every single race will be in the United States.

Basical things that ASCC has regardless of who's running it (READ THIS BEFORE ADDING CHARACTERS TO IT):

- Most teams except for the big ones will be slow
- Most, if not all drivers are American and men, the only exception is Nikki Curtis.
- A good part of the drivers come from the South.
- Rarely a African-American will appear; the last one I can recall is Tyrone Stanley back in the innaugural "season" in 2010.
- Yes this is a direct parody of NASCAR.

Team CTR: Back to the Drawing Board

Naugatuck-based Team CTR declared its plans for the 2014 ASCC season, and several groups within the team are reportedly unhappy with the decisions that have been made. The #27 team currently driven by Peter Simpson is to be discontinued, and all efforts will be focused on the #26 team. There is no report on whether Mickey Tyler will be re-signed at the moment.

The team also announced that they will be staying with Lenard, despite a more lackluster season compared to 2012 when they had support from Bolden. Primary sponsor ATMOS will not be staying on board, and the team has hinted that Tyler's status may be in jeopardy in favor of a driver with funding if his racing does not improve.

Bran Tanner, president of the ASCC division, stated that "this year was a big cost sink for us, and we can't afford to continue on like this. We're going to scale back to what made us successful in the past and hope that our driver will show the form we expect from them."

Current favorites for the driver's slot are Mickey Tyler and Connecticut short track driver Carl Daniels.

New car to be used in 2014? Similar to FARC?

It's being rumored that the FARC Elite Series and the ASCC might use a similar bodystyle in 2014. This rumors became more strong when rumors that Tonare ,Inglesby, Tuttle and Lycoia might join the series in 2014.
These rumors haven't been confirmed as for now. And if they're real, this would be a big change for the series.

Lenard Defecting. Lycoia in place?

At the same time of the rumors for a body style, other people are guessing that Lenard may abandon the ASCC in favor of the FARC and TM Master Cup Series programs. With this move, Lenard's parent brand, Lycoia could jump into its place with their own model, the Interceptor.

Paul Lyons returning to Saar USA in 2014?

Paul Lyons could return to the Team Saar USA to drive his #21 McDonald's car. A car that he drove for the former National Racing from midway 2005, when he was called to replace the deceased Johnatan Smith Jr., until midway 2009, when he was replaced by Ethan Everett.

Lyons currently races on TM Lights for BlackDiamond Racing.

Ian Cooper to do some appearances at Team Saar USA?Sharing car with TRAVIS MARSHALL.

A rumor that is gaining strenght in these last weeks is that Ian Cooper will return to Team Saar USA.....at least for a couple of races.

This fact may happen due to Frank Azure's defection from the team, joining Tom Delgado at the FARC Elite Series.

If this actually happens Ian Cooper will join the most unexpected person. Travis Marshall, son of the decesed one time TM Master Cup Series champion, and Cooper's rival, Steve Marshall. Of course, this decision would be polemic, since many Marshall fans accuse Cooper of causing Marshall's fatal crash, that happened at the 2007 Round of Talladega qualifying race.

Accelerator Motorsports to return? Also, Calvin Hobbes would return to the team?

Seems that the rumor mill about Accelerator Motorsports, a team currently owned by TMMC and TMLights team Terra International Motorsports. Calvin Hobbes, who moved to the #3 Atomo Detergent Lenard may be out of a ride at the end of the year. Accelerator Motorsports contacted Hobbes about a possible deal to get them back into the series with him as the lead driver. The team also is rumored to acquire Peter Simpson for the second car. So far rumors have the team attempting to sign two spots and reserve the numbers 41 and 96... However this is all speculation at best.

Tim Woodard may head to TMLights or the NRC if he doesn't get a ride next season.

Woodard, who is the younger brother of TMMC laughingstock, Greg Woodard, may be heading to another series to hone his skills. He's been rumored to find the ASCC too limiting to expand his horizons but isn't necessarily leaving it altogether as long as his current team retains him or he finds a ride with another team.

Lycoia dashes rumors of it's entry into the ASCC.

It seems that one of the biggest rumors to date is that Lycoia, which is the subsidiary of Lenard, would be switching places with Lenard as they (Lenard) focused on higher tier series.

"It's not true, Lycoia is not entering the ASCC, nor have we heard any plans to change up the body styles." Jack Sydney told reporters, "Lenard has not discussed plans nor do we believe that they would just up and leave the series that they have a nice niche in."

Murphy Intends on Returning for 2014

As per his usual, A.J. Murphy took a potshot at the retiring Tom Delgado as he announced that he would like to return to Big Bunny Racing for 2014.

"I want to come back to this team and this series next year, unlike a certain has-been who's doing the right thing by finally retiring" Murphy said. "We've made encouraging strides towards respectability, and I want to continue to help this team. I want to do something that old man Delgado will NEVER do: Win a championship" Murphy added, not realizing that Tom Delgado is only 6 points behind for the championship heading into the final race at Daytona.

MT Motorsports owner Caldwell's brother looking to start up own team for ASCC in 2014

Marc Caldwell has never considered himself in big brother Fred's shadow. After all, he wouldn't take a job as Middle Tennessee Motorsports' Chief Financial Officer and act as owner on weekends when races were held in multiple places if he did.

But the younger Caldwell has always wanted his own race team. And he feels now is the time.

Marc Caldwell put out a press release today stating that he plans to start up Caldwell Racing for the 2014 ASCC season. He has been talking to Bolden about supplying engines, and to his older brother about space at MT Motorsports' shop in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, along with getting some support from MTM in Caldwell Racing's early days. According to the release, the team is in talks with several companies about sponsorship, with Hooters being the frontrunner, reports say.

"I just think now's the time to start my own venture," Marc said. "Fred's been asking me for the last couple of years if I was ever going to get my own thing off the ground, but the right circumstances just weren't there. I wanted to make sure that his team was secure for the future before I went and started my own. MT's standing in the racing world is growing, so, I think it's okay for little brother to break out."

As for drivers, sources say that Caldwell has been talking with Brian Morris. The Canadian is currently driving for James Dalton Racing, and has had numerous chances to win races in the series this season, only for unforeseen circumstances to prevent him from doing so. Morris is said to be none too happy with the 00 car he's been driving, as it has not been as fast as those driven by the likes of Tony Durbin and Tom Delgado. Jacob Walls, currently driving for Mummert Racing, owned by Mark Mummert, father of TM Master Cup Series driver Kraig Mummert, who competes in ARLA's Tornado Alley Truck Series, is also rumored to have been in talks with Caldwell.

BBR Hoping to Retain Murphy, Anderson, Looking to Expand

After struggling in 2013, Big Bunny Racing is looking to retain AJ Murphy and Seth Anderson. Murphy scored the team's only top five of the season and additionally has three more top tens. Anderson has struggled with six DNF's in 2013. The team also stated that they are looking to expand from two to four cars.

Lethal Motorsports to Make ASCC Bid in 2014?

Lethal Motorsports, a team which mainly runs in modifieds across the country, is looking to move into the ASCC in 2014 with rookie driver Kylar Kingston. Kingston has won seven races in fifteen modified starts, and has additionally won a quarter-midget championship. The team claims to have sponsorship lined up for the full season, though said sponsor at this point in time has remained undisclosed.

Green White Checkered idea pitched to the ASCC

The GWC rule that is often used in the ARLA Elite Series, could be throen into the American Stock Car Championship. This idea came out after some events in the 2013 season that ended under yellow. This could be done to ensure a green-flag finish.

A rumour that doesn't surprise much people is that the ASCC could change owners after 2013, these owners could be europeans trying to work on the ASCC, expecting to buy out the series and adopt an more international nature.

Another rumour that is getting really strong is that the COT could not be used anymore, in a attempt to cut costs from building cars, a cost that was criticized by many racing analysts. is not known which body will be used, but is being rumored that it may be a body resembling the cars from the late 80s, a body that was used by the TMMC prior to 2012 or even the body that will be used by the FARC Elite Series in 2014.

ASCC considering overhaul of points, Chase

The ASCC is planning a vast restructuring of the points system in its premier Wrangler Cup Series that would greatly emphasize winning races and feature eliminations in its Chase playoff system, according to multiple sources briefed on the plan this week.

In addition to expanding the Chase field from 12 to 16 drivers, a win in the season’s first 10 races would virtually ensure a driver entry into the championship Chase. With this move the  winners + the highest drivers in points would be qualified for the chase.

Once the Chase field was set, a round of eliminations – similar to the NCAA tournament – would take place after the first, second and third race of the Chase, culminating with the championship determined by a winner-takes-all season finale.

Under the proposed system – which could still change before an expected announcement later this month – winning would become virtually a necessity to make the Chase and win the championship.

According to sources briefed on the proposal on Friday, 16 teams would make the Chase, with positions first going to full-time series contenders who won a race through the first 10 races of the season. Should 10 drivers not win races, the remaining slots would be filled by the drivers highest in points. The other 6 teams that didn't won any races but placed themselves into the first 16 positions would be into the chase.

Once the field is set for the Chase and re-seeded, the four lowest in points among Chase contenders would be eliminated from title contention after the first, second and third race in the Chase.

The four remaining contenders would enter the season finale reset with the same amount of points. The driver who earned the most points in the season finale would be the series champion.

Participants have been told changes could still occur in the format but the proposal addressed this week was the direction ASCC was now seemingly headed.

Re: 2014 ASCC Silly Season Thread

Post by bsoyuz on Mon Jun 23, 2014 12:57 am

(OOC: This happens when you have nothing to do in a Sunday morning/afternoon)

Master Cup Series bodies from 2011 and before to be used in 2014?

Rumors and talks between ASCC and TMMC teams indicate that the bodies that were used prior to 2012 in the TM Master Cup Series could be used in order to cut costs of building and buying cars and stop the exit of some teams from the series.

Teams like Team Saar USA, Ocean Motorsports, James Dalton Racing, Jack Cronin Racing, McDermott Motorsports, Power Surge America, Palmer Stiles Racing and Camelot Racing could have an advantage over the rest of the field by being former Master Cup teams, so, due to the bigger amount of former Master Cup teams, and the fact that these teams are bigger than the others, this is the direction that the ASCC could have in their minds.

75% Rule could be relaxed, or even taken down

With the rumor that the former TMMC bodies could be used in 2014, some racing journalists are saying that as effect of that, the 75 percent rule could be relaxed.
The 75% rule is a rule stating that only manufacturers that are at least 75% American are allowed to race in the ASCC. Is not known if the rule will change or not, but this could bring some strong manufacturers into the fight.

McCallister Motorsports "un-merging" from Saar USA

After winning the 2013 American Stock Car Championship, Garth McCallister Jr. could be in front of a new McCallister Motorsports operation. This new operation could be composed by several cars, going from 2 to 5 cars composing the team.

This could be the sign that McCallister Sr. may be bailing out from the ASCC leadership, scaling back to a team owner operations again, this could be a sign that McCallister may want to return to Master Cup competition, after regretting himself from forming the ASCC.

Bigger Calendar, winds of change hit the ASCC

It's being almost a confirmation that the chase system may be revamped following 2013, and this could be a sign that the series may be changing drastically from now on......

The calendar is being rumored to expand from 12 to 24 dates around America. The doubled calendar may be originated from the new chase idea, a calendar that puts into effect, 16 drivers, wins locking a driver into the chase, and the eliminations at the chase.

It could feature four road races, at Watkins Glen, Road America, Circuit of the Americas, and Sonoma. The calendar is also rumored to feature few short tracks, as Bristol, Martinsville and Grand Detour are being said to make their way into the calendar. These races could be added due to fans's choice and wishes. As these tracks normally feature some pretty big amount of wrecks good racing. The Texas 500 is being said to keep as the opener, but the track could be the Lone Star Supercell, as Texas could be getting a V8 Champ Car date in 2014.

Daytona would keep hosting the Firecracker 200, but the Delano Championships could be going to the Las Vegas Autoring, what will add a second date in Nevada, as the Las Vegas Motor Speedway will keep its date as the second race in the season.

Milwaukee could end getting a date, as also New Hampshire. Eldora is also being rumored to receive a date, as a form to connect the series to their dirt track racing roots.

Until this moment there's no confirmation on what could happen in 2014

JINX Racing in ASCC???

Post by JINXaPHRENIC on Mon Jun 23, 2014 2:45 pm

Nothing has been made official yet, but rumors are that Jinx Rodriguez is planning on returning to the ownership level across multiple series.

"The rumors are true that I am in fact trying to get back into full time driving and back as an owner full time. I do still own my own team but we have focused primarily on GT style and endurance racing with some rallycross for fun. I have already made the official request to bring my team back to the TMMC IT, FARC Elite Series full time, and TM Lites full time. I was also exploring my options here in the ASCC. I have funding for more than just one car for more than one season too. My goal for 2014 is to field a TMMC IT car, a TM Lites car, a FARC Elite Series car or two, and two fulltime ASCC cars. I plan to run my TMMC IT car of course and run with my TM Lites entry to try to redeem my poor rookie season showing. I did plan to hire different drivers for my FARC cars but never got approval from officials. That of course was partially my fault as I was unable to build a car and engine within regulation in time. I'll look to FARC in 2015. I do feel like I could help make the ASCC a home for a couple of drivers that need a chance. I feel like I could help discover the next star in motorsports. We'll see what the administration officials decide." Jinx Rodriguez

Retiring Delgado Criticizes ASCC For "Unnecessary Changes"

Taking his first steps into media punditry, four-division race winner Tom Delgado took a swipe at ASCC for making changes to its season-ending chase format.

"Why change something that was working? Why try to fabricate excitement when you naturally had it with all the championship scenarios? ASCC is a great series for the North American fans, but this change for the sake of change stuff will have a very negative effect on the series. They're unnecessary and ridiculous!" Delgado said in an interview with the magazine America's Raceday.

Tom Delgado won one race in the 2013 ASCC season and finished behind eventual champion Garth McCallister Jr. in the points standings.

Kris Whalen is looking hopeful during free agency

Whalen is the new kid in town, even no one knows that much about him, he is hopeful that he will get picked up by a team. Whalen's life dream is to be in the FARC Elite Series, and this is the place to start

TurboSports to have a ride for Timmy Welsch for 2014

After being unable to secure a full time ride for Timmy Welsch in the National Dirt Trucks, the team has been trying to get Welsch into a different series and the ASCC has been the most high profile series that the team can fund full time. The car has been rumored to be the #64 and will have his long term sponsor The Patty Wagon as his primary sponsor. Welsch will only be racing in the ASCC for 1 year because he will be racing full time in the APRS for 2015.

UPDATE: The manufacturer for the car will be a Lenard.

UPDATE #2: Due to the bankruptcy of the NDTC, Timmy Welsch will stay in the ASCC until further notice.

Calvin Hobbes secures sponsorship with UPS. Number being floated around as either the 41 or 68.

Tim Woodard secures sponsorship with Smith and Wesson, however, he hasn't secured any rides in the upcoming season.

New team may found its way into the ASCC

It's being announced that CJK Racing, a rather large team, that currently races in the American Super Stock Car Series, may move to the ASCC.
It's being rumored that the team could bring support from Nemoto, rather than their long time partner Bolden.

The team could have a lineup ready for 2014 and the team could be composed by the texan Eric Johnson in the number #30 unsponsored car and rumors are pointing Tim Woodard to their other car, which number is currently being announced as #36. there's no confirmation that the team will indeed join the series and if Tim Woodard could move to the team....

Late Model Driver Interested in Moving Up to the ASCC in 2014?
March 30, 2014

One of the several drivers rumored to be making his way up into the world of major motorsport in the upcoming season of the Goodyear Presents the ASCC Wrangler Cup Series, which will kick off in about two months with this year's running of the Texas 500, is Nick Van Gilder.

Van Gilder began his racing career by racing sprint cars on dirt tracks 9 years ago at the age of 14, and has spent many years since racing dirt late models on tracks such as the Port Huron Dirt Coliseum, the Terre Haute Action Track, and the Eldora Speedway. He has spent the last 2 years racing on more asphalt than dirt, competing in the Ohio Valley Late Model Series, and this year he has moved over to the National Pro Cup Championship following the OVLMS merger with the WCLMS.

Van Gilder, who turned 23 last Thursday, originally hoped to continue to try to hone his late model skills before moving up in the racing ranks, but Curtis Sawyers Racing, the team that Van Gilder has raced for for his entire late model career, entered him as a one-off in the Smash Beer 500 - the FARC Elite Series season-opener - this February. An impressive performance from Van Gilder in pole qualifying, where he was the 13th-fastest car among the staggering 153-entries, and in his B-Main has put confidence in himself that he is ready for the challenge of the daunting speedways of the ASCC, according to an interview with local sports reporters.

Van Gilder will attempt to go double-duty in 2014 with commitments in both the NPCC and the ASCC. Van Gilder has credited the ASCC's relatively short, primarily Summer months schedule as a reason that should allow the double-duty effort to be much easier for himself.

Curtis Sawyers Racing, while happy to let him race where he wishes to, will not be contesting any ASCC races, and for the time being, Van Gilder is looking for a ride among ASCC teams that are looking for a driver, hoping to get a chance to prove his worth on the greatest racing venues in America.

The team will now be known as Peak-Williamson Race Tech. We have also started a driver management program. It has yet to be decided what car we will use at this stage.

AutoNews: Rumors

Williamson Race Tech, who recently partnered with the Peak Motorsport Group, have been rumoured to be chasing the signatures of Nick Van Gilder and Tim Woodard for their newly formed ASCC team. Advance Racing looking to enter ASCC

Advance Racing, a newly founded team owned by renowned engine builder John MacPherson, is looking to enter a two car team in the 2014 ASCC Season. MacPherson, from Charlestown West Virginia, is no stranger to the motorsport. He has several years of motorsport experience in Sports Car racing, and also owns the Acceleration Park go-kart venue. It is widely expected that John's son Owen MacPherson will drive one of the teans cars. John MacPherson has stated that while sponsor and manufacturer deals are not yet confirmed, they hope to sort out these details in the next week

TM Lights driver Archer Harris looking to run ASCC

The hot rumor circulating is that Archer Harris, current TM Lights and Independent's Trophy driver, is planning a run in ASCC with a new team. Saints Racing, a team based out of Wichita, KS, recently purchased a few Saars that meet ASCC regulation, as well as acquiring sponsorship from Hobby Lobby. The Oklahoma based hobby shop, which is well-documented for having religious beliefs, wanted to make a break into racing, and this team along with Harris was a match made in heaven. Unsure on when or if this team will make it to the track, but it seems to be highly likely as of now.

Tim Woodard loses Smith and Wesson sponsorship, will Caterpillar steps up to fill the void. Woodard also applying for the number 22.

Tim Woodard is joining forces with Caterpillar. His sponsor, Smith and Wesson pulled out at the behest of Moms Demand Action, leaving Woodard high and dry. Caterpillar, a company based near Peoria, IL, soon filled the void. With Woodard now securing sponsorship, he has also applied to Saints Racing, the same team that has acquired Archer Harris. Only time will tell if the ASCC veteran will continue running in the series or move onto doing something else.

Woodard to enter one race as a one-off, will be sponsored by FROZR Graphics and using the number 41 like last season.

It seems that Greg Woodard has caved to fan requests (and money) to go ahead and try to work in a one off spot in a 2014 ASCC race. More information will be posted on a later date.

Micheal Humpfreys looking to defend Texas 500 title in one-off

The former winner and defending Texas 500 winner is interested to return just to race the 500. The former James Dalton driver, who has applied for a ride in TMMC, may return with Dalton just for the race, but Humpfreys has said that he would not race part-time.

Humpfreys : I'd be great to run the Texas 500, heck i want to win the damn thing.

Team Saar USA Sells ASCC Division to McCallister, Durbin Out

Team Saar USA announced that it has sold its ASCC operation to Garth McCallister, effectively reforming McCallister Motorsports. McCallister, who previously ran McCallister Motorsports in the TM Master Cup series for over 30 years, confirmed that he would be running "at least two" cars for the 2014 ASCC season.

One of those drivers is McCallister's son, reigning ASCC champion Garth McCallister, Jr., who will run his father's famous #12. The second driver is believed to be Nikki Curtis, but no announcement on a second or possible third driver was made.

Tony Durbin, however, confirmed that he will not play a role in the reformed McCallister Motorsports. Durbin said that the number of available ASCC-spec chassis was an issue.

"It's a shame that Peter [Keyes] had to sell the team to the McCallisters, and it's a shame things didn't work out so I could stay with them, but that's life. Time to move on. I've got a few plans, but I hope to be back next year." Durbin said.

Durbin also speculated that the ASCC's car count might be significantly diminished for the 2014 season.

"I'm not sure what the ASCC is going to do, honestly. Of the teams that are still around, I can't think of many that have more than two chassis available. I think even Camelot Racing only has like two cars left. So many of the ASCC cars were sold off to FARC teams once the season ended because FARC rules are easier to get around. The series will need to do something about the car rules or there will probably only be like 10 cars showing up to each race."

(OOC: Foreshadowing?)

RUSSIAN ROOKIE LOOKING TO BREAK IN
Russian race car driver Mikhail Ovechkin is still looking for a ride in stock cars. Ovechkin, who has won lower-tier European open-wheel championships and is best known for only having one foot, is looking to bring his sponsorship elsewhere. RUSOIL, Ovechkin's sponsor, is looking toward the ASCC for its efforts. The Russian oil company has been noticeably critical of Russian politics, and is looking to distance itself from the country it was founded in. RUSOIL founder and CEO Yevgeny Petrolovsky was quoted as saying, "What better way to protest the government than by taking Russian money and a Russian driver and fielding him in an American series with the ASCC's colorful history? We have more than enough money to field Mikhail for a full season as well as a part-time second entry for any interested team. We wish to continue to support Mikhail's efforts as he seeks to one day win the Karjala Grand Prix."
Ovechkin himself was quoted as saying, "I already have plan to move to USA as soon as I have contract. I wish to race in the most competitive and most fun atmosphere the planet has to offer. Plus, what team wouldn't want to have the fame and press associated with having a disabled driver?"

Russian Rookie to ASCC in 2014

Jay Holifield Racing is set to formally announce Mikhail Ovechkin as the driver of the #10 Lenard next season. Ovechkin said: "I am excited to move to the US and drive for Mr. Holifield's team. This exciting learning curve and I hope have at least three top-5s in my first year of oval race." Ovechkin brings much needed sponsorship to team as RUSOIL, the oil company, is set to be the full-time sponsor for Ovechkin's car. The company is also expressing interest in sponsoring the team's #25 car, driven by Danica Holifield. Jay Holifield is yet to comment on that possibility, however.

JHR FORMALLY ANNOUNCES OVECHKIN AND RUSOIL

Today in the team's new workshop in Mobile, Alabama, Jay Holifield formally announced that Russian driver Mikhail Ovechkin has been signed to his ASCC team for 2014. Ovechkin, a rookie driver known for only having one foot, brings valuable sponsorship from Russian oil giant RUSOIL, who will appear on both the #10 of Ovechkin and also on the #25 of his team-mate Danica Holifield, the daughter of the team owner and reportedly one of the only women to compete in ASCC next season.

Gulf Motorsports Looks to Return to ASCC

Louisiana-based Gulf Motorsports is aiming to return to the ASCC after a 2-year absence.  "Last year we got a bunch of cash from our deal with RON Oil and were hopin' to make it back onto the grid for [ASCC] but we couldn't get the entry ready for the full season," team owner Kevin Walsh stated.  "We went FARC racin' with Mark [Thompson] and got some good info with our old cars; nearly won the damn Modified championship with Frank [Zarrow] with some equipment we bought, was just a good season all-around.  Recently backed into some old Volpis laying around so we're gonna work on 'em and make 'em good for competin' again.  Should be good times, Mark's always wanted one of those championships, so we're gonna try and get him one."
