2014 Chevrolet Indy Dual in Detroit presented by Quicken Loans

Post by SpeedDemon37 on Mon May 26, 2014 4:57 pm

With the tradition and glory of Indianapolis behind them, the teams and drivers of the Verizon IndyCar Series head to the Motor City for the Chevrolet Indy Dual in Detroit presented by Quicken Loans for the sixth event of the 2014 season. The race weekend will be IndyCar's fifth visit to the island, the fifteenth since Bobby Rahal won the first CART race here in 1992, and the second year in which the event is a double-header.

Mike Conway and Simon Pagenaud enter the race as the defending winners. As each of them have already scored wins this season, both of them are definite threats to win here again. However, they will have to challenge Helio Castroneves (the only driver to have won this race multiple times), the Indy 500's newest champion, Ryan Hunter-Reay (who also happens to be the current points leader), and about two dozen other racers, most of whom who are looking to win here for the first time.

In addition, the Saturday race will be the first IndyCar race in history to be attended by yours truly!  It will also be the third race that my grandfather has ever attended, and his first in 64 years! The last one that he attended was the Indianapolis 500 in 1950!

Pagenaud and Conway were, respectively, first and second on the speed charts in practice earlier today. Looks like they haven't lost any speed from their wins last season. Castroneves was the third-fastest, Will Power was fourth, and Ryan Hunter-Reay was fifth.

Complete practice results: http://www.indycar.com/News/2014/05/5-30-Drivers-primed-to-break-track-record-on-Belle-Isle

Also, Pagenaud is running a new paint scheme this weekend! Tony Kanaan will also be running a new scheme, but I cannot find a picture.

20 laps in and already three cars out.

Oh, and Rahal is leading. Huh.

Will Power wins after his earlier hipcheck on Pagenaud. Rahal finishes second, but, you know, strategy.

Power punted off Pags, and blocked Rahal to no end at the restart, still wins. Penske Racing in a nutshell.

Hunter-Reay throwing it into the tires trying to get around Marco in Turn 5. Wow.

Wow, Graham drove an impressive race today. Overall it was a pretty good race today. I have a feeling tomorrow will be a lot like last year's madness.

Even Pagenaud admitted that the contact with Power was probably his own fault. He didn't have enough of a run to justify trying to go alongside and Power needed the outside to set up for the next turn.

The block on Rahal was pretty sketchy, though.

GW Power. Stunning run by Rahal and Hunter-Reay does damage to himself in the title fight by going in WAY to hot.

While he may have gained some spots on pit strategy, Rahal was actually one of the fastest cars on the track today from what I saw, as he passed a number of cars on track. Not to mention he set the fastest lap.

I was actually really rooting for him to win this one, or at least for him to beat Power. The block on that final restart was exactly what I was fearing would happen, as I was afraid that they would crash in the process.

Regardless of who won, I really enjoyed being at the race!

Rahal finally did what the car was capable of. He had the same engineering team Conway had last year.

Aka the only reason Dale Coyne's team was regularly... kind of fast. Neutral

Power won that one cleanly. For once.

Will Power, that was not even close. 3 wide on the first lap is not the way to go, and hopping the kerb in that situation was even more ridiculous.

Congrats to Helio for winning Race 2 at Detroit. Hunter-Reay is likely gonna forget this weekend for sure. Great race weekend overall. A 8.0/10.

The right guy, aside from Conway, won today, and he should've won yesterday. I'm beginning to think that instilling TM Master Cup-style active time penalties would be a good idea, because for Power to be in contention for the win after causing that stupid accident on Lap 1 is a joke, and how Briscoe wasn't penalized for trying to go in-between Sato and Hawksworth when not even a motorcycle would've fit is beyond me. I certainly hope Ganassi's not considering keeping him around next year, because there's another driver on the grid (*cough*Newgarden*cough*) who would do a much better job. Anyway, nice to see Kimball back on the podium, as well, 'cause dude's been anonymous this season.
