2014 St. Petersburg Firestone GP - Verizon IndyCar Series
The IndyCar Series is back for 2014! The first race of the season is held in the streets of St. Petersburg in Florida. Last years championship was great to watch, including the incredible last lap battle at Brazil between James Hinchcliffe and Takuma Sato, to the ultimate parking lot of Baltimore. Will this year produce yet more exciting racing? Well it's just about to start!
And bizarrely the dramas already started, as one of the transporters for the Rahal Letterman Racing team recently caught on fire, which may set them back for the first event of the Season.

My understanding is that whenever Huertes isn't in the No. 18 we'll see him in the 4.

Super excited for St. Pete and the Indycar season to finally begin! The racing has been great the last few years, so I hope this year is no different.

Out of interest, is Indy Lights shown live? The grid is quite interesting this season, Harvey, Razia, Brabham and now Ghirelli.

Vicky Piria, aka Italian Danica, is running Pro Mazda.
The thing about Autosport is that they only have so many free views per user a month. But if you want to get around that, just go to racer.com, because they reprint a lot of Autosport articles.

Re: 2014 St. Petersburg Firestone GP - Verizon IndyCar Series
I have a tip about James Jakes that I received through a source at BHA. Supposedly he's talking to a 'team with no driver' to run a partial schedule or possibly the rest of the season. I don't know the team but if I have to guess I'd say Panther, as they do not have any major financial backing at the moment and Jakesy has some.
Hopefully there's some truth to this because Jakes seems to have improved a lot in the past few years. I think Rahal made a mistake by not keeping him, but I could be wrong: Graham has done well so far in St. Pete.

Fastest in practice and in qualifying; looks like Sato may win again!  It would be nice to see Kanaan win in Franchitti's #10 car, though.
In other news, Gabby Chaves will start from the pole for the Indy Lights presented by Cooper Tires race after setting the fastest time of the two practice sessions, as qualifying was cancelled due to weather. He will share the front row with Zach Veach, another Indy Lights sophomore.

I really hope Will Power will get penalized for that dumb move he made on that restart.

Power thing looked like a combo of Power trying to Kyle Busch it and people anticipating him doing it so random smashing. 50/50 tbh.

Brian Barnhart is in race control again, so that's why Will Power didn't get parked. Nobody anticipated it -- and he just slowed down.
In other words -- no penalties to Penske cars.

Wow, welcome back to 2009, IndyCar. Hope you guys can get it back together before Indy.
What's it going to take to get Barnhart fired?

Why in the hell...does IndyCar...keep bringing Brainfart back to run these damn races?! Did Beau Barfield leave during the off-season or something?? Â Â Â

Re: 2014 St. Petersburg Firestone GP - Verizon IndyCar Series
Pretty solid race, although learning about Brian Brainfart being back in race control really killed it for me. He didn't really kill today's race like he did Toronto last year, but if he's back in race control for the duration of the season, I'm fearing the worst for IndyCar. Their on-track product is, IMO, the best in the world right now, but bringing this moron back into the fold could potentially ruin it. Â Â Â
The 2014 Firestone St. Petersburg Grand Prix gets a 6.0/10. Would've been higher if it were not for the fact that Brainfart is back. Damn it, IndyCar. Why? So depressing.

Pretty meh race to start it.
Power seeming like he's returning to the form championship-wise.

The only saving grace is that Beaux Barfield is still the race director, but knowing that Brian Barnhart was back in the control booth today left a sick feeling in my stomach, and if he's in race control for the duration of the season...
Then God help IndyCar. Â Â

Anyone find irony in Barnhart being back and people are upset at Penske.

Especially considering Penske got away with everything...

Are you kidding me now? Brainfart's back in race control? WTF!?!?
So it explains why Power didn't get penalized for that restart.

Not the best Indycar race I've ever seen, but I still got a lot of enjoyment from it. Too bad Sato couldn't hang on in the second half of the race.

I'm pretty sure Penske got penalties back when Barnhart was having a crack party running race control, I'd have to look for specific examples but they for sure received penalties whether it be fair or unfair.Cynon wrote:Alta wrote:Anyone find irony in Barnhart being back and people are upset at Penske.

Barnhart I heard doesn't have sole control. I heard he shares it with Barfield and I think one of the Unsers!

What power did was dangerous and other drivers could've gotten hurt. Of course racing is dangerous and it always will be but there's nothing good about creating a situation like that for no reason other than to get a better restart. Power should've gotten a drive through for that.
Re: 2014 St. Petersburg Firestone GP - Verizon IndyCar Series
Power said the flagman waved the flag early. Even then, though, he shouldn't have waited to get going.

Re: 2014 St. Petersburg Firestone GP - Verizon IndyCar Series
I honestly thought that Indy Car had a restart rule similar to what NASCAR has, which is you have to maintain a minimum RPM/MPH speed when leading the field towards the green. Either Indy Car doesn't have that kind of rule or they just never bothered taking any consideration in looking into the restart rules at all.

I would say the same thing about the rest of the field. Everyone went "OH GOD" like freakout panic.NeverNeutral wrote:Power said the flagman waved the flag early. Even then, though, he shouldn't have waited to get going.

It was my understanding that a green flag waving in the air was basically the universal signal for "punch it". If you see green, you're in the gas. We have a race to run, buddy.

Race control will be a rotating group of officials this year, with three in race control for each race. The three stewards will be Barfield, a driver steward, and an IndyCar official at each race. For this race, it was Barfield, Barnhart, and Johnny Unser. Next race at Barber, it could be different.

Sort of a tough call for this situation. IndyCar's rules state that the flagman controls when the green flag flies, unlike NASCAR, where the leader controls it. But if the flagman waved the green early, then it was a botched restart.
