Pure Nationwide Series Thread Empty Pure Nationwide Series Thread

Post by Alta Sat Aug 24, 2013 7:06 am

So the most common complaint you hear out of everyone who watches the Nationwide series is that the cup drivers are ruining the series and the series should stay to the young guys/veterans wanting that one more chance to show they still got it. Some people even goes as far as excluding cup drivers from the results and call the first Nationwide guy the true winner.

This got me thinking...How would past seasons and this season be affected if there were no cup drivers coming into the series to ruin the fun and if the Nationwide series was an actual true feeder series.

List is a bit incomplete at this time, But am in the process of calculating the points from said years and getting the all the year compiled.

1995:

Daytona: Chad Little
Rockingham: Chad Little
Richmond: Kenny Wallace? (Ran 20 of 31 cup races) or Johnny Benson
Atlanta: Johnny Benson
Nashville: David Green
Darlington: Larry Pearson
Bristol: Chad Little
Hickory: Johnny Benson
Loudon: Chad Little
Nazereth: Tim Fedewa
Charlotte: Chad Little
Dover: Mike McLaughlin
Myrtle Beach: Larry Pearson
Watkins Glen: Chad Little
Milwaukee: Larry Pearson
Talladega: Chad Little
South Boston: Chad Little
IRP: Jason Keller
Michigan: Randy Lajoie (Canned Mid-Season in cup) or Johnny Benson
Bristol: Jeff Green
Darlington: Johnny Benson
Richmond: Johnny Benson
Dover: Johnny Rumley
Charlotte: Jeff Purvis
North Carolina: Johnny Benson
Homestead: Tim Fedewa

1995 appears to be relatively close to how the championship fight went down between Little and Benson. Benson though instead of 2 wins manages to get 6 and Chad Little only picks up one more win.

1996:
Daytona: Steve Grissom (Sacked mid-year) or Larry Pearson
Rockingham: Mike McLaughlin
Richmond: Jeff Purvis
Atlanta: David Green
Nashville: David Green
Darlington: Steve Grissom/Todd Bodine/ Jeff Green (Sack/Picked up ride)
Bristol: Jeff Green
Hickory: David Green
Charlotte: Randy Lajoie
Dover: Randy Lajoie
South Boston: Todd Bodine? Or Mike McLaughlin
Myrtle Beach: David Green
Watkins Glen: Todd Bodine? Or Mike McLaughlin
Milwaukee: Buckshot Jones
Loudon: Randy Lajoie
Daytona: Greg Sacks? (Short Stint in cup) Randy Lajoie
IRP: Randy Lajoie
Michigan: Jeff Purvis
Bristol: Jeff Fuller
Darlington: David Green
Richmond: David Green
Dover: Randy LaJoie
Charlotte: Chad Little (Short Stints in cup) Mike McLaughlin
Rockingham: Mike McLaughlin
Homestead: Kevin Lepage

The fight in 1996 was a nailbiter to the finish and with it appears to be the same in this scenario. Lajoie picks up one more win to bring his total to 6 while Green takes out another 4 and ties Lajoie on win monitor with no cup guys. The Green brothers also go on a 5 race winning streak

1997:

Daytona: Randy Lajoie
Rockingham: Randy Lajoie
Richmond: Steve Park
Atlanta: Elton Sawyer
Las Vegas: Todd Bodine
Darlington: Randy LaJoie
Hickory: Randy LaJoie
Texas: Todd Bodine
Bristol: Mike McLaughlin
Nashville: Steve Park
Talladega: Steve Park
Loudon: Mike McLaughlin
Nazerath: Eillott Sadler
Charlotte: Kevin Lepage
Dover: Randy Lajoie
South Boston: Randy LaJoie
Glen: Mike McLaughlin
Milwaukee: Randy LaJoie
Myrtle Beach: Eillott Sadler
Gateway: Eillott Sadler
IRP: Randy LaJoie
Michigan: Steve Park
Bristol: Steve Park
Darlington: Mike McLaughlin
Richmond: Steve Park
Dover: Joe Bessey
Charlotte: Tony Stewart
Fontana: Todd Bodine
Rockingham: Hermie Sadler
Homestead: Randy LaJoie

Randy Lajoie in both real life and in this scenario comes off with a pretty baller season. He notches 4 more wins to his book to a total of 9 wins...Although it appears Steve Park and Todd Bodine his points rivals would get 3 more wins under to get 6 (Park) and 4 (Bodine) separately.

1998:

Daytona: Jeff Purvis
Rockingham: Matt Kenseth
Las Vegas: Dale Earnhardt Jr
Nashville: Mike McLaughlin
Darlington: Matt Kenseth
Bristol: Eillott Sadler
Texas: Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Hickory: Ed Berrier
Talladega: Phil Parsons
Loudon: Buckshot Jones
Nazareth: Tim Fedewa
Charlotte: Matt Kenseth
Dover: Dale Earnhardt Jr,
Richmond: Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Pikes Peak: Matt Kenseth
Glen: Ron Fellows
Milwaukee: Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Myrtle Beach: Randy Lajoie? (Short Stint) Mike McLaughlin
Fontana: Dale Earnhardt Jr
South Boston: Tim Fedewa
IRP: Dale Earnhardt Jr,
Michigan: Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Bristol: Phil Parsons
Darlington: Dale Earnhardt Jr,
Richmond: Dale Earnhardt Jr,
Dover: Matt Kenseth
Charlotte: Mike McLaughlin
Gateway: Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Rockingham: Eillott Sadler
Atlanta: Dale Earnhardt Jr
Homestead: Matt Kenseth

What was a close title fight in 1998 appears to become a one-side beat down in favor Dale Jr., Junebug scores a staggering 12 wins which is 5 more then his actual total, while Kenseth goes from 3 to 6. Phil Parson manages to get 2 wins in the late 90's!

1999:

Daytona: Randy Lajoie
Rockingham: Randy Lajoie
Las Vegas: Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Atlanta: Dave Blaney
Darlington: Matt Kenseth
Texas: Jeff Green
Nashville: Jeff Green
Bristol: Jason Keller
Talladega: Jeff Purvis
California: Matt Kenseth
Loudon: Elton Sawyer
Richmond: Matt Kenseth
Nazerath: Matt Kenseth
Charlotte: Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Dover: Dale Earnhardt Jr.
South Boston: Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Glen: Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Milwaukee: Casey Atwood
Myrtle Beach: Jeff Green
Pikes Peak: Andy Santerre
Gateway: Dale Earnhardt Jr.
IRP: Jason Keller
Michigan: Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Bristol: Matt Kenseth
Darlington: Dave Blaney
Richmond: Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Dover: Casey Atwood
Charlotte: Mike McLaughlin
Rockingham: Jeff Green
Memphis: Jeff Green
Phoenix: Ron Hornaday
Homestead: Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Junior once again with a sound defeat over the rest of the field going from 6 to 9 wins with a 3 race winning streak in the middle. Jeff Green and Matt Kenseth take 5 wins a piece as well.

2000:

Daytona: Jay Sauter
Rockingham: Jeff Green
Las Vegas: Todd Bodine
Atlanta: Todd Bodine
Darlington: Jeff Green
Bristol: Jeff Green
Texas: David Green
Nashville: Randy LaJoie
Talladega: Buckshot Jones
Fontana: Jeff Green
Richmond: Jeff Green
South Boston: Tim Fedewa
Charlotte: Jeff Green
Dover: Jason Keller
South Boston: Jeff Green
Myrtle Beach: Jeff Green
Watkins Glen: Ron Fellows
“Road America:” (ESPN isn't really your best source when Racing Reference is down) Jeff Green
Nazerath: Ron Hornaday
Pikes Peak: Jeff Green
Gateway: Kevin Harvick
IRP: Ron Hornaday
Michigan: Todd Bodine
Bristol: Kevin Harvick
Darlington: Elton Sawyer
Richmond: Jeff Green
Dover: Jason Keller
Charlotte: Jeff Green
Rockingham: Jeff Green
Memphis: Kevin Harvick
Phoenix: Jason Leffler
Homestead: Jeff Green

Jeff Green demolishes the field and goes from 6 in reality to 13 wins in this scenario. Other interesting tidbits includes Jay Sauter winning the season opener and Jason Leffler winning circa 2000

2007:

Daytona: Scott Wimmer
Fontana: Regan Smith
Mexico: Boris Said
Las Vegas: Shane Huffman
Atlanta: Sam Hornish
Bristol: Scott Wimmer
Nashville: Jason Leffler
Texas: Jason Leffler
Phoenix: Regan Smith
Talladega: Kyle Krissloff
Richmond: Scott Wimmer
Darlington: Jason Leffler
Charlotte: Regan Smith
Dover: Scott Wimmer
Nashville: Jason Leffler
Kentucky: Stephen Leicht
Milwaukee: Aric Almirola
Loudon: Scott Wimmer
Daytona: Jason Leffler
Chicago: Stephen Leicht
Gateway: Scott Wimmer
IRP: Jason Leffler
Montreal: Patrick Carpentier
Watkins Glen: Brad Coleman
Michigan: Todd Bodine
Bristol: Jason Leffler
California: Scott Wimmer
Richmond: Scott Wimmer
Dover: Brad Keselowski
Kansas: Todd Bodine
Charlotte: Aric Almirola
Memphis: Marcos Ambrose
Texas: Tony Raines
Pheonix: Scott Wimmer
Homestead: Stephen Leicht

I am going to look back on this one too make sure i didn't screw up the winners, (Lot of these winners finishes way down the running order)in reality Wimmer finish 6th of the Nationwide guys while Leffler was best of Nationwide boys. But Wimmer in this scenario pulls off 7 wins against Jason Leffler's 6. Notable rejects like Kyle Krissloff and Shane Huffman actually win races, Stephen Leicht picks up 2 more wins, Bodine gets two wins in relatively anonymous car, Ambrose randomly wins at Memphis, Carpentier wins Montreal = Track riot, Aric Almirola gets a win after Sub-gate, Tony Raines wins a race out of no where, Sam Hornish wins a race while still in Indycar and Brad Coleman wins at Watkins Glen off all places

2009:

Daytona: Jason Keller
Fontana: Brendan Gaughan
Las Vegas: Jason Leffler
Bristol: Justin Allgaier
Texas: Brad Keselowski
Nashville: Brad Keselowski
Phoenix: Jason Leffler
Talladega: Tony Raines
Richmond: Brad Keselowski
Darlington: Jason Leffler
Charlotte: Mike Bliss? Or Brendan Gaughan
Dover: Brad Keselowski
Nashville: Brad Keselowski
Kentucky: Brad Keselowski
Road America: Brad Keselowski
Loudon: Brad Keselowski
Daytona: Brad Keselowski
Chicagoland: Jason Leffler
Gateway: Mike Bliss? Brad Coleman
IRP: Brad Keselowski
Iowa: Brad Keselowski
Glen: Ron Fellows
Michigan: Brad Keselowski
Bristol: Brad Keselowski
Montreal: Andrew Ranger
Atlanta: Brad Keselowski
Richmond: Brad Keselowski
Dover: Mike Bliss?/Brad Keselowski
Kansas: Brad Keselowski
Fontana: Brad Keselowski
Charlotte: Mike Bliss? Brad Keselowski
Memphis: Brad Keselowski
Texas: Jason Leffler
Phoenix: Brad Keselowski
Homestead: Steve Wallace

Brad Keselowski with the most disgusting beating of the field i've ever seen...in 35 races he picks up 21 WINS with a streak of 6 wins mid-season and then 7 win streak late in the year. Other notes include Steve Wallace winning the last race out of no where, Andrew Ranger continuing the Canadian party train, Tony Raines wins at Talladega and Brendan Gaughan and Jason Keller win races in 2009.

2013:
Daytona: Sam Hornish
Phoenix: Justin Allgaier
Las Vegas: Sam Hornish
Bristol: Kyle Larson
Fontana: Sam Hornish
Texas: Austin Dillon
Richmond: Brian Vickers
Talladega: Regan Smith
Darlington: Eillott Sadler
Charlotte: Kyle Larson
Dover: Brian Vickers
Iowa: Trevor Bayne
Michigan: Regan Smith
Road America: AJ Allmendinger
Kentucky: Eillott Sadler
Daytona: James Buescher
Loudon: Brian Vickers
Chicagoland: Sam Hornish
Indy: Brian Scott
Iowa: Sam Hornish
Glen: Sam Hornish
Mid-Ohio: AJ Allmendinger
Bristol: Austin Dillon

So far in our 2013 scenario, Sam Hornish seems be the odds out favorite with 5 wins out of everyone...but Kyle Larson and Brian Vickers use the lack of Cup drive to get a few wins out of the deal.

Some of these names are question marked due to wanting to see what you guys think about their status as if they should be labeled cup drivers or not...All drivers listed with the question mark or some type of note had either a ride they were kicked out of mid-season or had short stints in cup during that year.

I hoping to continually updates this as we get further into 2013 and finish up the rest of the seasons in due time.

Any suggestions/issues/idea are welcome. Very Happy

If there were no cup guys in the field, the entire race would be different, but regardless this is really cool to see, it must take forever to do.

I think so far 2007 was the hardest as the winners in the study were way down the order in real-life.

2001:

Daytona: Randy LaJoie
Rockingham: Greg Biffle
Las Vegas: Greg Biffle
Atlanta: Greg Biffle
Darlington: Jeff Green? Jason Keller
Bristol: Tim Fedewa
Richmond: Jay Sauter
Nashville: Greg Biffle
Talladega: Mike McLaughlin
Fontana: Hank Parker Jr
Richmond: Tony Raines
Loudon: Jason Keller
Nazereth: Greg Biffle
Charlotte: Jeff Green? Jason Keller
Dover: Elton Sawyer
Kentucky: Greg Biffle
Milwaukee: Greg
Watkins Glen: Ron Fellows
Chicago: Jimmie Johnson
Gateway: Jason Keller
Pikes Peak: Jeff Purvis
IRP: Greg Biffle
Michigan: Ryan Newman

Richmond: Kevin Grubb
Dover: Jeff Green? Chad Little
Kansas: Jeff Green? Hank Parker Jr.
Charlotte: Greg Biffle
Memphis: Randy LaJoie
Phoenix: Greg Biffle
North Carolina: Mike McLaughlin
Homestead: Elton Sawyer

Jason Keller was the best of the Busch guys in reality but Greg managed to pick up 5 mores win and put his win total to 10. Other interesting note includes Elton Sawyer in 2001 getting 4 wins.

I think in 2009 Bliss and Kez shared the 09 in Cup, so he could be considered Nationwide.

Not to mention, Kevin Harvick wasn't originally supposed to race in most of the cup races in '01 due to the death of Dale Sr.

I guess you'll have to draw the line somewhere as to what is an acceptable number of cup races for an "all nationwide" series driver to run. A lot of the development drivers will run a handful of races the year or few years before they move up full time, so it really isnt fair to consider them cuppies because of those few starts.

On a similar note, what would it look like if all the NW drivers were excluded from the results and only cup driver finishes counted? Lol

I actually completely missed Keselowski's thing...So i'll look over that a little closer.

The big issues with this is the part-time/handful of cup races some of the regulars will run.

Harvick i technically consider full-time cup. Cause he ran all but maybe 2 races in that car...I know circumstances that were outside his control...but i think more people remember him in cup that year then Nationwide.
