2014 Formula One World Championship - The teams and drivers of next season Empty 2014 Formula One World Championship - The teams and drivers of next season

Post by Milan655 Wed Aug 21, 2013 2:56 pm

With the 2014 silly season in full boom, I thought that this would be the most abt moment to produce a prediction for the 2014 World Drivers' Championship. Forgive grammatical errors and spelling mistakes, this was initially written on an iPhone and took 2 hours-no way was I going to bother proof reading it Very Happy

Predicted 2014 line-up:

Caterham:
1. Charles Pic-has a contract into 2014, and there appears no other heir to the coveted number 1 seat at Caterham.
2. Anyone's guess, perhaps Alexander Rossi if he can put the money together? Then there's the nightmarish possibility of Sergio Canamasas along with his vast wealth of sponsorship money. Protect your rear wings lads.
The only thing which appears certain is that Giedo van der Garde will fail to guard his 2014 seat with a dismal 2013 display and not nearly enough money from McGregor or whichever Dutch company van der Garde has been wasting their time of.

Ferrari:
1. Fernando Alonso-as much as anyone may speculate, Alonso's home is at Ferrari. The perfect place for a man with an ego as such as Alonso. Of course, he's also contracted to drive for Ferrari in 2014 in any case.
2. I'll hedge my bets on either Nico Hulkenberg or Kimi Raikkonen claiming the second seat at Ferrari. Hulkenberg was repeatedly linked with a move to the Italian squad last year, only to find himself at the Hinwil based Sauber team. With Sirotkin seemingly coming into the lineup for 2014 and with Esteban Gutierrez's massive sponsorship behind him, it's only obvious he's on his way out of the team. With the results he's been putting in with a disappointing Sauber, it would be no surprise should he find himself in a top tier team such as Ferrari. Raikkonen meanwhile has reportedly agreed to rejoin the team which he won his sole World Championship with back in 2007, however I personally see this to be unlikely. Plus, why go to Ferrari when you have full support from a successful team such as Lotus? Raikkonen is not interested in fame and money, but results only and with Alonso leading the line up as Driver Number 1, Raikkonen would be better off staying with Eric Boullier's outfit.

Force India:
1. Paul di Resta is contracted for the improving Force India team, however di Resta has marked himself out as a young talent, and having spent 3 seasons at Force India will be eyeing a move to a more capable team. Force India's Chief Operating Director, Bob Fernley, has further commented stating that they will not force Paul to his contract should a team come knocking for him. The seat then, I feel, is entirely wide open. The team could possibly bring in an entirely new face, or perhaps give a driver such as Heikki Kovaleinen a much deserved return to Formula One? Or even give Pastor Maldonado a deservedly better race seat?
2. I'll go with Adrian Sutil. He's put in a set of very good results, however at the tender age of 30 and no apparent other race seats available it only seems obvious that Force India would keep the familiar and experienced Adrian to further their progress through the midfield.

Lotus:
1. The situation at Lotus is much more difficult to read than most other teams. With the future of Raikkonen very much uncertain, and with Romain Grosjean having a difficult start to the 2013 campaign the seats at Lotus could be anyone's. However, as I mentioned earlier, it is seemingly the best choice for Raikkonen over the likes of Red Bull and Ferrari where full support for a campaign toward a championship bid may not be found.
2. While he had a turbulent start to the season, Romain Grosjean has settled down and has recorded 2 podiums as well as enough points to see him in 8th, 12 points from disappointing Felipe Massa in 7th and a massive 85 away from team mate Raikkonen in 2nd. Along with an ever growing presence of Davide Valsecchi in the Lotus garage, it seems as if part 2 of Grosjean's F1 career could be drawing to a close. Despite this, Eric Boullier has claimed that with improved results Grosjean will likely remain with the squad, and with only half the season remaining anything could happen. After all, he's still in contention to win the title, even as an extreme outsider. I'd consider either Grosjean or Valsecchi, dependent on Romain's second half of 2013.

Marussia:
1. Having taken on Ferrari customer engines in 2014, there will be at least one driver occupying the seats which has been embedded by Ferrari. Of course, that could be none other than the highly rated Jules Bianchi who has said he would like another season outing in the "new" Russian team before making a serious attempt in the top echelon of the sport. Albeit, if Ferrari want to go the wrong route and push the extremely talented Raffaele Marciello too early, then this may be the case. However, with Ferrari being the main backer behind Marciello, and considering the intelligent minds behind the Ferrari Driver Academy (Luca Baldisari), this will definitely not be the case. Keep an eye on Marciello, however, who is definitely set to make his mark in Formula One in the upcoming seasons.
2. Seat number 2 could go to anyone with the money, and considering the amount of money currently sitting beneath young Max Chilton, it would only be obvious to suggest him to remain at the team for another season unless another driver with an even more expansive amount of money makes his/her way down the paddock and presents a case full of Russian Rubles under the nose of the Marussia officials.

McLaren:
1 & 2. As far as I'm aware, both drivers are under contract again for the 2014 season. Both Jenson Button and Sergio Perez are dependable drivers and have been putting in the efforts in what has been one of the most lacklustre efforts from McLaren to develop a car since the mid 90's. Jenson Button is essentially 100% with the team next season, and I could estimate Perez at around 99%, with no other top tier seat available at his command. Additionally, both drivers are under contract for 2014.

Mercedes:
1 & 2: This is another team which I feel the driver line-up has already been completed. With both Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton under contract into 2014, and with both drivers performing substantially well it is almost certain that they both will stay at the Silver Arrows. Away from the oppressive British media, Hamilton has shone alongside ex-kart and GP2 team mate and I would argue that this is the best I've ever seen of him, even more than his first 2 seasons at McLaren.

Red Bull:
1. Sebastien Vettel.
2. With Mark Webber joining Porsche in their first prototype attempt since the dominating Porsche 962C of the Group C era, the seat has been left open. Daniel Ricciardo, however, will be joining Vettel at Red Bull to only become the 2nd graduate of the Red Bull Junior system to find their way into the main team.

Sauber:
1. Following a recent purchase of Sauber team stakes from a Russian business group, Sergey Sirotkin has stood out as the main contender for the Sauber seat. With "daddy" being one of the members of this Russian group, it only seems certain. Sirotkin will make his F1 debut this year when he demonstrates the Sauber around the newly built Sochi track which will join the F1 calendar next year for the Russian Grand Prix.
2. I'm going to speculate that Esteban Gutierrez will stay at Sauber for an additional season, however I have heard very little about any development for the second seat at Sauber. Almost certainly, it won't be Hulkenberg who's pay check has reportedly been defaulted over the past 6 months. Oops.

Toro Rosso:
1 & 2. While a recent meeting between Luis Garcia Abad and Christian Horner was taken to mean a switch for Alonso from Ferrari to Red Bull, more reliable sources have confirmed it was actually in reference to Carlos Sainz Jr, another client of Garcia Abad's. Sainz performed well in his Young Driver's test opportunity at Silverstone recently, and with very little word on developments within Toro Rosso, this appears to be the only concrete information regarding the ex-Minardi outfits future line up. Alternatively, Antonio Felix da Costa impressed in GP3 and Formula Renault 3.5 last year, but his season had been less incredible this year playing a more silent role to McLaren youth driver duo Kevin Magnussen and Stoffel Vandoorne, as well as independent competitors Will Stevens and Nigel Melker. Considering how Toro Rosso have treated drivers in the past, Jean-Eric Vergne might find himself playing a test driver role next season should Toro Rosso take on the two younger drivers.

Williams:
1. It seems Pastor Maldonado might be making his way to a team such as Force India in light of William's continued depression as the fall into the doldrums of the bottom 3 teams, Formula One fans may join me in horror as we face the potential arrival of talented stuntman Johnny Cecotto. In the light of Cecotto, even Canamasas seems a less dangerous option.
2. In a lesser frightening statement, we should hope to see Valteri Bottas make a return next season. While it's not confirmed, lets hope the talented fin is given another year to prove his worth and willingly in a better car next time round.

On their way out:
*Mark Webber-After the controversy at Malaysia among other pivotal moments, Webber will leave the team which he has been a part of since it had competed under the Jaguar Cars banner, and will make the switch to sportscar racing with Porsche's new effort to dethrone Audi from the top of LMP1.
*Felipe Massa-While unofficial, Massa appears to have reached the end of a successful career in Formula One. After losing out on the 2008 Formula One world championship on the last corner, Massa has scarcely looked the same even prior to his near career ending accident in 2009's Hungarian Grand Prix.
*Jean-Eric Vergne-While it is far from confirmed, considering the short lasting Toro Rosso stay of past unsuccessful Vettel prodigies, Vergne might well be on his way out of Formula One especially with 2 young drivers from Spain and Portugal snapping at the heels of his racing seat.

Up next-we discuss engines.

Not to mention if another, top quality driver comes into Ferrari, and does better than Alonso, that he will start bitchfitting

Post by Milan655 Mon Oct 07, 2013 1:19 pm

Not a real thread for 2014 silly season in F1, so I thought I would post here again. Maldonado is almost certain to not drive for Williams: http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/news/formula-1-maldonado-stay-home-2014-154240639--f1.html

In brief, Maldonado will either drive for Force India (or even more unlikely Lotus) or nowhere at all.

Force India should dump di Resta and Sutil and get Kevin Magnussen and Stoffel Vandoorne. Now that would be a dynamite pairing.

PRobably Marussia because of his country. I don't see Sauber choosing him after a year off and with other younger drivers to choose from.

I suppose you're forgetting the most recent investors in Sauber. They're Russians too!

He's a Red Bull Junior driver, his primary sponsor is Red Bull..

Daniil Kvyat is challenging for the GP3 title and is a front runner in European F3. I think he deserves it as well.

I agree, Kvyat is quite talented, but still, I think this is a bit too soon for him. Then again, after the year da Costa has had, what options did they have?

I understand that Redbull has there fingers on him. I'm glad he's getting a chance but I feel like it's way too soon. Might be wrong but I feel like he'll be another back marker in a series that is suppose to be the best 22 drivers in the world.

In Lotus, Romain Grosjean will remain but Bouillier is yet to 100% confirm it, saying he is waiting for stability in ownership (see next).

Massa will not be an option at Lotus, as both Nico and Pastor have contracts organised. The decision between Hulkenberg and Maldonado will be made depending on whether Lotus secure financial investment from a UAE/Russian group known as Quantum Motorsport. If they fail to achieve the investor, Maldonado will be signed.

At Force India, Max Chilton has been in contact with Force India, while they have also offered Hulkenberg a contract already so whether he joins depends on the situation with Lotus.

Maldonado is 100% leaving Williams, saying he would "rather stay home than drive a backmarker".

Jules Bianchi is also confirmed to drive Marussia next season.

Eh, he's kinda half-right. Maldonado isn't the best driver on the grid, but Williams is pretty much garbage these days. I wouldn't be surprised if they fell out of F1 within the next five years.

Some of it. We have seen that Maldonado has the speed, he just needs to know how to keep the car in one piece. Once he does that, he will be a force to be reckoned with in a good car

They will be dropped. Concord Agreement means teams are entitled only to compete in 20 Grand Prix in a single year.

Also, Maldonado will not drive for Lotus next season as Quantum Motorsport have finalised a deal to purchase 35% of the team and have requested Eric Boullier to sign Nico Hulkenberg, which the team now has the funds to hire.

It's Kevin Magnussen. Sad for Perez but I reckon Magnussen really deserves a proper race seat after his FR3.5 campaign.

More in terms of repair costs maybe... Perez has had his ass destroyed by Button this year. And we haven't really seen Button at the top of his game at all this year. Kevin Magnussen, on the other hand, is probably the biggest talent to come along since Sebastian Vettel.

While Perez hasn't had a great year, he hasn't been as bad as people want him to be. McLaren has looked lazy all year. They had the fastest car in F1 at the end of last season, and tossed it for a car that was shockingly slow at preseason testing, a car that didn't gain a lick of speed by Australia. Instead of doing the right thing, which would be switching back to the MP4-27, and continuing to improve the MP4-28 until it could compete for wins (like what Ferrari did with the F2003-GA), or maybe, realizing it was never going to get to that level, and just scrap it altogether, they basically said, "Fuck it. We'll be back next year," before the season ever really got going. If the higher-ups didn't care, why the hell should the drivers? The more the season has gone on, the more respect I've lost for Whitmarsh. There's a reason Horner's been kicking his ass for the last four years, and for my signature (Alonso is the only reason Domenicali still has a job). Horner's built a team that wants to win every single weekend. Whitmarsh was handed a job that he continues to prove he isn't worthy of holding.

He's had one good race all year and had his ass kicked in every department by an out-of-sorts Jenson Button. That is bad in my book, when Perez can't even top Button in qualifying, something Jenson has been extraordinarily weak at.

lolnope. McLaren have said this several times - the MP4-27 was at the end of its development cycle. Not to mention that this has no bearing on Perez individually being crap.

and continuing to improve the MP4-28 until it could compete for wins (like what Ferrari did with the F2003-GA), or maybe, realizing it was never going to get to that level, and just scrap it altogether, they basically said, "Fuck it. We'll be back next year," before the season ever really got going.
They did bring out several upgrades and the performance gains relative to the front were negligible. Why bother throwing money at what is patently obviously a lost cause, when your team is expected to challenge for championships year in and year out? Better to just cut your losses and work towards something that isn't a lost cause.

If the higher-ups didn't care, why the hell should the drivers?
That's the weakest argument I've seen in quite some time. Maybe they should care because if you're not motivated to give it 100% when it's rough going and the higher-ups need all hands on deck to try and stem the tide, then you're giving them a good reason to fire you? That goes for literally every job. If the reason that Perez is getting his ass kicked is because he just doesn't care, then he should be sacked right now and the seat given to someone who actually won't waste it.
