2014 Rolex 24 at Daytona

Post by RealRacer4 on Thu Jan 23, 2014 10:41 pm

The newly formed TUDOR series had their qualifying session today at Daytona to set the starting grid for the 24 hour race. The line-up: not what I was expecting to see.

Alex Gurney, in the Corvette DP, qualified on the pole for the race. The fastest timed LMP car? 10th place, which will be driven by Graf, Luhr, and Brundle in the Muscle Milk Nissan Oreca entry. What also surprised me was how some of the PC cars managed to time better than the regular Prototype cars. And of course, for those that are curious as to where the Delta Wing qualified, it qualified 7th. Yup. That's right. It out-qualified more than half of the of the regular prototype cars and was only a second off the pole.

Now, I usually don't follow sports car racing very closely, but I remembered when the Delta Wing was first raced, it was designed with less power than a lot of the cars it raced against and was going for efficiency in fuel mileage and reduce the number of pit stops to get ahead of the field. Whatever the engineers did with the Delta Wing over the last couple of years, they definitely have done well enough to keep up with a lot of the fast cars without losing whatever fuel mileage it has.

Either way, it should make quite an interesting race. I'm glad this merger finally happened with Grand-Am and ALMS, as I'm curious to see with how the whole race throughout as far as how long the DP cars will do in the long run with the modifications, how the Delta Wing will fare against the field, etc.

Also, there were 3 cars that had their qualifying times disallowed. The 78 Dinan Riley DP had ride height issues, as well as an unapproved part. 2 of the Audi R8 GTD cars (46, 48) had ride height issues and unapproved parts as well.

EDIT: This link leads to the entire line-up, but for some reason, the link that's popping up on the actual post is being a pain.  Neutral

Can't say I'm too surprised about the result, The DPs have had years of notes from this track so naturally the teams fielding these cars had an unfair advantage to start with. Don't be surprised if the opposite happens at Sebring for the exact same reason.

I would say "Go away Mazda, no one likes you anymore", but I think they would easily have more fans if they had those screaming rotaries back.

Honestly that Mazda team strikes me as better funded than most of the other prototype teams, they have an all pro full time lineup, and they have a pair of IndyCar drivers as relief drivers. So this result is very embarrassing. By the way "Skyactiv Technology" is just a marketing exercise.

GTLM will be fun to watch. I'm pulling for Porsche but the vipers will be very hard to beat.

Holy crap, I miss the first 3 hours of the race and come home to find a driver possibly fighting for his life. Shit, we don't need this after Le Mans last year Crying or Very sad

A german motorsports page I ran through google translate said it took 18 minutes to extract Memo. That is an eternity. The cockpit must have been seriously compromised

For those of you who's cable providers are a$$holes that won't let you stream video (I'm looking at you WOW), there's a feed from Magnus Racing. It doesn't show the racing action but it will tell you what's happening. There was a very interesting talk with EJ Viso about an hour ago.

Straight from the TUDOR Championship Facebook page:

Memo Gidley, driver of the No. 99 GAINSCO / Bob Stallings Racing Corvette DP, underwent surgical procedures on both his left arm and left leg at Halifax Health in Daytona Beach, Florida. Gidley also has an unstable fracture in his back which will require additional surgery before he can be released from the hospital. He continues to be evaluated.

Matteo Malucelli, driver of the No. 62 Risi Competizione Ferrari 458 Italia, remained at Halifax Health overnight for further evaluation. He continues to rest comfortably. An update on his condition will be provided later today.

Surprisingly similar to the crash that claimed Ignazio Giunti's life, I'd prefer it if we didn't have another 2013 on our hands.

Re: 2014 Rolex 24 at Daytona

Post by Alpineopossum on Sun Jan 26, 2014 9:54 am

I have to wonder if Wayne Taylor & Co. can pull it off this time. Although Wayne has a tendency to wine about things, his sons aren't that way and after all a Taylor is a Taylor.

I should mention that the last time there were three South Africans (or in Jordan and Ricky's case, Americans of South African heritage) were in the same car it was 1984, the drivers were Sarel van der Merwe, Graham Duxbury, and Tony Martin. They finished first in the Kreepy Krauly Porsche. The name was a South African pool cleaning product. Sarel isn't remembered much today, but he was a versatile driver, winning in rallying and in sports cars. He also attempted the Daytona 500 in 1988 for Rick Hendrick. He was quick but had bad luck in the Duels and DNQ'd. He later ran as a road course ringer for Hendrick, and I believe he is the only driver from South Africa to start a NASCAR Cup race. He's still pretty famous in South Africa. His facebook page shows him with his arm around a lion, so he's a pretty cool guy. But I digress. This could be a great year for WTR. Never, ever count out Max the Ax.

Ganassi is never out of it either. What surprises me is that the Oak Racing #42 isn't more of a factor. Did they run into trouble?

What a great finish. The #5 team deserved it but I was rooting for Max the Ax to get it done for the #10 team. And there was no contact between the Ferrari and the Audi. Just hard racing. How can they call that avoidable contact?

The Ferrari's were weapons in that last run. 555 should not have got a penalty for the last lap, though...

However, he SHOULD have got a penalty for the contact in the bus stop a few laps earlier. In the end of the day, it's karma.

The last caution was BS, But we wouldn't have got what we got with had it not come out.

Hell of a finish and a nice race. Action Express thoroughly dominated and deserved that win.

555 team deserved the penalty after the contact in the bus stop, Sure there was no contact in the last turn incident but it's more of Karmic Retribution.

Glad to see Winkelhock win as well. SPYKER 4 LIFE.

I didn't say it was the correct call. The correct call would have been to call them out for the contact in the bus stop, in my opinion. Like Alta said, it's karmic retribution.

Overall the race was pretty good.

But thanks to Magnus Racing I'm going to have David Hasselhoff burned into my mind, but I now have respect for SHANEVANGISBERGEN. (He still has to answer my question about which kind of soup he likes.)

I'm also glad Memo Gidley is alive, and I hope he recovers.

The one problem with the penalty though was that they didn't immediately send it out, they waited until after the race ended to through it out (basically, they pulled a FIA on them). If they would have done that before the last lap, then it wouldn't be as bad a problem.

Also, I really want to punch the guy that screwed up the GTLM battle. He should have watched where the hell he was going.

It honestly frightens me how bad the chassis looked after the wreck. And they weren't going that fast compared to when they were on the oval part of the track. I know a lot of race chassis built today need to disintegrate to absorb some of the impact but I think that's a bit much.

The DP's are relatively untested in huge wrecks. I can only remember two big smashes off the top of my head with a DP. One being Long Beach in 2006 and Scott Preutt's pit wall wreck at New Jersey a few years back.

There were two very bad wrecks during DP testing this year. Action Express and Spirit of Daytona both had cars go airborne and flip.

As crazy as the cars getting up in the air was, they didn't seem to share the violence that all three of the previous heavy smashes had.
