Zanardi and Kahne couldn't secure the rides for obvious reasons (but shame on both of them for being babies about it), ditto for Pastrana (who honestly would have been hilariously bad).
I also find it VERY hard to disagree with Wheldon, though...

I figured it was going to be one big joke to begin with.

Should do this as an all-star type event in December tbh.

Or at least some time during the offseason
20, 30, 40 years ago, this would of worked, but today, unless you are a ringer that travels around to vastly different series, doing something like this is out of the question.

The Race of Champions in Europe is a perfect example of an event like this that actually works. Jeff Gordon has won this before, Carl Edwards famously beat Michael Schumacher (and then was beaten by Schumi in a rematch the next year), Sebastien Bourdais, Sebastien Loeb, etc...
Of note, Jimmie Johnson was terrible when he faced Schumacher in the ROC... and Jimmie brought out a big bag of excuses when he hit a few walls...
But the ROC works because it's in the middle of the offseason when most of these drivers have little better to do than drive everything from Smart cars to dune buggys around a stadium. The IRL can't be faulted at all for the attempt, because if it wasn't for a few things out of the league's control, it might have been pulled off successfully.
