Dario Franchitti is told not to race again by doctors

Post by Ben Atkins on Thu Nov 14, 2013 4:04 pm

According to Jenna Fryer on Twitter, Dario's career is over;

Jenna Fryer ‏@JennaFryer 1m
#IndyCar NEWS: Dario Franchitti says doctors have told him he can no longer race because of injuries suffered in Oct. crash at Houston

Jenna Fryer ‏@JennaFryer 59s
Dario: "The risks involved in further racing are too great and could be detrimental to my long term well-being." #IndyCar

Jenna Fryer ‏@JennaFryer 37s
Dario: "Based on this medical advice, I have no choice but to stop." #IndyCar

Not at all what I expected, or wanted, to see. Sad

EDIT: Official article from CGR is here. http://chipganassiracing.com/ViewArticle.aspx?articleid=14019

I hope he gets well soon, sucks he won't be back in the car though.

I'm also not surprised he took doctors advice, he won Indy 3 times and the championship 4 times, that's a pretty damn good career imo.

You don't wish career-ending injuries on anyone, even those who you love to hate. Dario was a damn fine driver. Excellent career, and I wish him well.

Poor Franchitti. I'll be honest, looking back at the late in his career, his Racing Career seemed to have gone down the drain ever since the Season finale in 2011 when he won his 4th championship under tragic circumstances of the death of Dan Wheldon. The only other win he's had since then and the change to the DW12 car is the 2012 Indy 500.

To me he didn't seem to adapt to that car very well and his wreck at Houston has pretty much ended it all. But still a very sad way to end a career but he's done everything he needed to do in his IndyCar Career and maybe he can at least relax a little bit, but we'll still miss him behind the wheel of a Race Car.

Always hate him, still will, but it's never good to see another driver having to retire due to injuries.

This sucks. Franchitti is one heck of a racer and competitor, and I can't believe we won't be seeing him back out there. I guess it's in his best interest not to risk injuring himself further, but still, to think that a guy we're so used to running up front nearly every week has one crash and then, boom, he's done. Just awful.

This news has just blown me away. We all knew that Dario was going to retire within a couple of years or so but none of us would've thought his racing career would end this way. He's had a hell of a career in Indy Car with his 3 Indy 500 wins and 4 ICS championships. Now the question is: who will be replacing Dario? My guess is that Kanaan might move over to Dario's car and Ganassi will look for someone else to drive or stay with having a 3-car team like they did this year.

Kanaan already announced his 2014 plans two days ago.

I disliked him mainly because of his Ex Wife! But this sucks for him. However I don't think we have seen the last of Dario in Indycar, I think he'll be involved in some form!

Wow, what a terrible shame. You certainly never wish for a driver's career to end that way, no matter how much you like or dislike them. Thankfully he and everyone else that was in the crash are still relatively okay, though.

Sadly, Dario Franchitti joins Danny Sullivan and Emerson Fittipaldi (and to an extent, Rick Mears) as IndyCar champions whose careers ended about a year before they would have anyways because of a huge crash.

Now that the #10 car is open, it raises the question if Chip Ganassi will put someone like Newgarden or Simona de Silvestro in that car or will he pull some boring never-was like Tagliani in? Or will he see if he can't work some magic with another Italian and run Luca Filippi?

Or, will he just decide to stick with three cars like he did this year, with Dixon, TK, and Charlie? Wilson could also be a demon in the 10 car, in addition to Josef and Simona.

Anyway, I had a feeling this would happen after the crash. It was a pretty savage accident, and I was beginning to wonder if that was the last we'd seen of Dario. I figured the crash would see him walk away because he'd realized that if he had another (and he's had some pretty bad accidents before where he got right out of the car), he might not be so lucky, or, as is the case here, the injuries would be enough to push him out. It's a shame, but at least he's alive, and will be for a long time, and his legacy is good enough where the only question we have to ask is, "What if he could've won Indy for a fourth time?".

2013 has to probably be one of the most dangerous racing years in a while. Fan injuries (Like 50 i think), Fatal wrecks, driver injuries, and just some nasty accidents throughout the year.

Here are the candidates for the No. 10:
• Alex Tagliani — Has experiance with Ganassi (at California in 2013) and a long racing career over the past ten years. Is confirmed to be testing in the off season, and has a strong chance of getting the spot
• Simona de Silvestro — Could be in the frame for a ride. Is well liked and has shown a lot of speed. Possible if she's not confirmed by KV
• Josef Newgarden — Like Silvestro but I believe he's in a contract with Fisher
• Sage Karam — Indy Lights champion, but supposedly driving for Sam Schmitt Motorsports.
• Peter Dempsey — Strong Indy Lights record. Unlikely but possible.
• Oriol Servià — Experianced and talented and looking for a ride.

Franchetti should ask for a position with race control. Maybe then we'll get some consistency regarding penalties and whatnot

He was never my favorite driver, but I never wanted to see him have to retire this way. I respected him as a great competitor, and one of the best in racing. Fantastic career.

May be a wild card choice, but I'd love to see Sage Karam in the 4th Ganassi car. I think the guy has a lot of potential. That is if Sam Schmitt Motorsports doesn't have him.

He'd make an excellent commentator. And now that Marty Reid has left ESPN, there's an opening. Make it happen.

He actually was in the booth in last year's Iowa race after his engine went boom on the pace lap.

There was a lot of questionable calls he got away with. I think Japan was another one where took out like 3 cars and didn't get anything for it.

There was also Long Beach 2012, when he tapped Newgarden going into turn 1 on the first lap.
