MAVTV 500 -Indycar
The season finale for the IZOD Indycar Series, and also the last race with the IZOD sponsorship. It's now a battle between point leader Scott Dixon and Helio Castroneves.
Alex Tagliani is going to be the replacement for the injured Dario Franchitti, Allmendinger is back in the Penske #2, Pippa Mann is in the 18 for Dale Coyne, and J.R. Hildebrand is in the 98 Barracuda entry, but other than that, I expect the entry list to be the same as always.
I expect this race to a good one seeing as how they have the same aero package as Indy, and last year didn't disappoint either.

Pulling for Helio. Dude's been at it for about 15 years now and can never close the deal.

I prefer Dixon, but I want Helio to win the championship because he hasn't yet. This is a great opportunity for Carpenter to run well, hopefully he can get a top 5 out of this at least.
Last year's race was excellent, so I expect another good one this year.

I hope Helio fills the one hole on a Hall of Fame resume.
We live in a Golden Age of American open-wheel racing (despite what some critics say), and it's a damn shame that one of the most popular drivers in the sport is not a champion. I hope he corrects that.

Re: MAVTV 500 -Indycar
I think Helio can do just enough to pull it off and walk away champion at California.
Re: MAVTV 500 -Indycar
As much of a sentimental favorite Hélio (and despite how much I like him) is because he hasn't won a championship, it will feel as hollow as his 2002 Indy 500 "win". He really doesn't deserve to win the championship this year.
Penske cheated to win Texas, Hélio's only win of the year so far, whereas Dixon has won multiple races the right way -- by kicking ass on race day. Penske has resorted to some very underhanded tactics to stop Dixon, and it seems like the officials are out to get the Ganassi boys, too (hello Brian Barnhart). Anyone with a soul would be as fired up as Dixon is, and I'd certainly be very wary of A.J. Allmendinger or Will Power...
Even though I really hate Chip Ganassi, I'm going to pull for a Scott Dixon championship to complete his one-championship-every-five-years run, and because he is a far more deserving champion. Then he'll win the title again in 2018.

Although, Viso did support Mike Conway's decision to stop racing ovals, and he sucked at Fontana last year.

I thought Viso was fine after hitting Sato. Whatever. #belikemike
I would love to see Hélio get it, but I think Dixon is going to get it. I've noticed the #9 a lot more this season than the 3 and has more wins than Hélio, obviously. (Could somebody fill me in about Texas? I missed that race, but I remember hearing that Castroneves crushed everyone) Penske hasn't seemed to be quite able to beat Dixon, so even with all the swaying towards the 3, Dixon is probably going to take his 4th. (Or would it be his 3rd?)

Viso's chickening out. He supported Conway last season and the quotations would make sense if they reporters called bs.

I'm guessing Wilson might have a broken leg/ankle or 2 considering how hard he was t-boned from Vautier. I hope him and Simona are okay, though, the only thing I saw happened to Simona was that she just spun out.
Also, if they were going to be under caution for this long, can't they just throw out the red flag?

This Indy Car race...
The finish wasn't what you would call very exciting but the racing was great. With a bunch of cars falling out of the race left and right reminded me of the old CART/IndyCar days. I'm not really all that mad about a Ganassi driver winning it since it was a well-earned win for the title. This further proves why the ICS has become my new favorite series to watch.

Entertaining race which was also quite attrition filled. Penske just blew the title hardcore by not paying attention...Hell couldn't even take advantage when Dixon's motor was going sour. The last 50 laps were pretty batshit insane, all dat passing and racing yo!
Fun season overall as expected with Indycar. Lots of great races last year and i'm looking forward to the next season.
Also....Simona who some people thought was injured in that Wilson crash finishes in the top 10. Speaking of which...hope Wilson will be back in time for the new season...pretty hard shot with Vautier. Sucks we got two big injuries at the end of the year.
I still <3 Indycar though.

Bah, I was hoping Ed would've tracked him down with that bizarre racing line near the end. Oh well, he gave it a great run. Besides a bit too much yellow, it was a fantastic race to end the season.
I wanted to see Helio win this, but Dixon deserved it the way he ran the second half of the season.
It's going to be long offseason. But Indycar will be back better than ever in 2014!

Yeah, I would've loved to see Helio win the title as well, but at the end of the day Dixon was just simply amazing over the whole course of the season. He really deserved it, and had to work hard to get it - which is how it should be.
Have to give a shout out to Charlie Kimball - that guy drove like an absolute boss out there. I'm absolutely gutted for him that his engine died, but he's gonna be a force to be reckoned with sooner or later, I think.

It was starting to turn into the 2000 CART finale at Fontana - when only six cars finished, and the Top 5 (Fittipaldi, Moreno, de Ferran, Mears, and Fernandez) were the only ones on the lead lap - towards the end there.

Re: MAVTV 500 -Indycar
Does Dixon deserve the championship?
Based on his performance, absolutely. 4 wins, including three in a row, and basically dominated the 2nd half of the season when it counted the most.
Based on his attitude, fuck no. While it's understandable for him to be upset by the supposed shenanigans Penske caused this year, he could've conducted himself in a more respectable manner instead of acting like a Kyle Busch wannabe.
But it is what it is. Great race, spectacular season. Can't wait for 2014.

Deserving champion -- did it the right way while Castroneves was (understandably, sort of) driving like a dick the entire race. Either way, very entertaining season finale...

Yup. When you win 4 races and are only halted by the actions of your title rival's teammate, you are a more deserving champion. Especially when Helio's only win of the year ... well, Penske got caught cheating and got off easy.Ben Atkins wrote:His driving won him the championship. Driving is the main attribute in winning a championship. Dixon drove stellar all year, and how he conducted himself in interviews shouldn't be a factor as to whether or not he deserved to win the championship or not, in my eyes. I'm not disputing the bolded statement. I'm just saying that if he conducted himself in a more appropriate manner, then we wouldn't be having this conversation at all. It was a good championship, but that doesn't mean I have to like it. That's all I'm saying.
Bottom line, Dixon, good job on winning the title, but seriously, stop trying to impersonate Kyle Busch. It only makes you look like a toolbag.

Scott Dixon won three championships in a top level series
Scott Dixon doesn't run a full Indy Lights season and boost his win level there
Scott Dixon doesn't irrationally wreck people at anywhere near the rate that Kyle Busch does
Scott Dixon made it to the top by himself, not by having a famous brother

Based on his attitude, fuck no. While it's understandable for him to be upset by the supposed shenanigans Penske caused this year, he could've conducted himself in a more respectable manner instead of acting like a Kyle Busch wannabe.
But it is what it is. Great race, spectacular season. Can't wait for 2014.

There were some occasions where Dixon had the right to be.PackerMan71 wrote:I was referring to his attitude, not his driving skills.Alpineopossum wrote:There's no comparison between Kyle Busch and Scott DixonPackerMan71 wrote:I guess were gonna have to agree to disagree then.Ben Atkins wrote:Driving is the main attribute in winning a championship. Not to interrupt this argument of whether Dixon should be champion, but Justin Wilson has posted on Twitter that his pelvis is fractured in three spots. He says no surgery is needed, and there are no other serious injuries other than his pelvis.

Maybe, but his interviews made him seem more like a whiner than anything else.bigdc48 wrote:There were some occasions where Dixon had the right to be.PackerMan71 wrote:I was referring to his attitude, not his driving skills.Alpineopossum wrote:There's no comparison between Kyle Busch and Scott DixonPackerMan71 wrote:I guess were gonna have to agree to disagree then.Ben Atkins wrote:Driving is the main attribute in winning a championship. Considering the utter absurdity that happened at Sonoma and Baltimore, Dixon has every right to be a "whiner" IMO. His outrage was perfectly understandable and justified.
