2012's Race of Champions will see it's most internationally diverse championship with nations across Europe, North America and Asia competing for the coveted World Cup of Motorsport as they head to Bangkok this weekend. The ROC will be introducing the ROC Asia championship on the Friday which will determine which nation will fill the empty spot in the nations cup, whilst the winning drivers will be placed into the Race of Champions. However, the first event to be seen on the day will be the ROC Thailand, with 4 Thai drivers competing for two spots in the Race of Champions, and will also determine which two Thai drivers will represent their nation in the Nation's Cup. Thailand, represented mostly in motorsport by the likes of former Grand Prix winner, Princa Bira, WEC LMP2 runner up, Tor Graves, and Red Bull, will see Tin Sritrai, Nattavude Charoensukawattana, Nattapong Horthongkum and 'Kiki' Sak Nana competing for the historic opportunity to represent Thailand at home.

Tin Sritrai, the youngest at 24, has emerged into single seaters after 12 years in karting, including two championships in the Asian Karting Open Championship in 2008 and 2009, and has finished as a runner up in the Asian Formula Renault 2.0 championship in 2010, only beaten by Sandy Stuvik, another talented Thai youngster who turned 17 in April of this year. His other success is a 5th place in the Formula Pilota China series, competing against the likes of Matheo Tuscher (2012 F2 runner-up), Robert Visoiu (14th in 2012 GP3) and Riccardo Agostini (2012 Italian F3 Champion). He receded back to the SuperCar Thailand championship, where he has seen some success.

Nattavude Charoensukawattana, 49, another SuperCar Thailand driver, was the 2010 Champion in the SuperCar Thailand championship, securing 5 wins and 7 podiums across 8 races, and competes for the Toyota works team. Alongside him as his team mate is Nattapong Horthongkum, who finished 2nd in 2010 with 1 race win and 7 podiums, and previously featured in Formula BMW Asia, where he finished 4th in 2003 behind champion Ho-Pin Tung. 'Kiki' Sak Nana is a Red Bull sponsored driver, competing in the SuperCar Thailand championship with their sponsorship, as well as in such drifting championships as Formula D, also under Red Bull sponsorship.

Now, a look at the groups:

China (Han Han, Ho Pin Tung), India (Narain Karthikeyan, Karun Chandhock), Japan (Kazuya Oshima, Takuto Iguchi) and Thailand (winners of ROC Thailand).

Doohan hasn't been a pro racer for years. We should of got someone else e.g. Webber, Ricciardo, Power, Lowndes, etc.

I agree with the fact it is a weak field, but you can't blame the organisers really. Due to the way contracts are formed, in some cases drivers are disallowed to drive outside of their contracted championships, and in the case where a driver is in a factory team is not allowed to drive a car other than the one which they are set to drive in whatever they are contracted to; this is the case with Ferrari, and was the case while Coulthard was at Mclaren (he could only drive Mercedes by contract.) But to be honest, there are still some good drivers and they are much better than what was seen in IROC really, if you compare:

Didn't Mark Martin get into IROC because of his 4 ASA National Championships? He also won 5 IROC Championships. Just thought I'd throw that out there. Razz

I guess why IROC still had "International" in their name was because when it first started out, it had several international drivers. I could be wrong, though.

Sam Hornish, Jr.- 3 time IRL champion - 3rd in the championship that year, wasn't really in the title fight but won two races so again debatable.
Martin Truex Jr.- 2 times Busch Champion - Champion in the Busch series so he deserves to be in.
Scott Sharp-1996 IRL Champion - 5th in the championship with one win...Debatable but leaning towards disagreeing

In fairness IROC was designed to put Nascar over the all the other US/world divisions as there schedule was all NASCAR tracks and half the field were nascar drivers.

But since i feel like comparing the two, let's look at whole the field look in their respective timeframes. (see above)

And wow...You argument does check out as despite what looked like a weak field this year in ROC (You can excuse Karthekeyan though ;P) 2006 iroc from a driver's in the field standpoint was not that good.

It was something similar to ARCA, but it ran on more short tracks in the Midwest United States. The National Tour that Martin was involved when went defunct in 2004. I wouldn't consider it a major series, but more of a stepping-stone to get into NASCAR. (Dick Trickle, Rusty Wallace, and Johnny Benson are just a few that made their way to NASCAR through the ASA) Hope that clears things up.

IROC started as something true to it's name, but it eventually turned into NASCAR lite. That was the reason it died (not the identical car deal like many revisionists to NASCAR history like you to think).

In any case, I will be back there last night. It was brilliant yesterday, even the intervention shows; David Coulthard went round in an RB7, the sound was a amazing, Terry Grant was also there doing donuts and the unsuccessful Asian drivers went drifting Very Happy
