Should NASCAR get rid of the road races?

Post by BWardboy88 on Tue Aug 07, 2012 8:33 am

This article from NASCAR.com completely blew my mind:

Road racing is sewn into the fabric of the sport's history. Car racers throughout time have cut their teeth on road courses throughout the nation and the world, using the track style to climb the ranks of racing into the top levels on the sport. But, in a cutting-edge sport like NASCAR, do the road courses still cut it at the Cup level? A Cup calendar once littered with them now boasts only two out of a 36-race schedule. Does that make sense? As the sport's most well-worn road race still left standing approaches, Mark Aumann and Nick Margiasso debate the big question: Should NASCAR get rid of the road races?

No!!!

NASCAR wants to because it is difficult for them to control. Debris cautions are difficult to use on a road course

The fact that the sport only has 2 out of 36 road races is sad. It should be closer to 50/50 IMO

I only think 4-5 races should be on the road. Just my opinion, but the cars weren't built to speed around road courses. Just like IndyCars have no business on high-banked ovals.

As much as I don't want to agree with Matt, I am. NASCAR doesn't need to get rid of road racing. That being said it doesn't need the schedule to be half road racing. NASCAR is not a road racing series. There are series with primary road racing. If someone wants that, they can watch that.

I still think NASCAR should add more short track races and maybe a dirt race over more road courses. Honestly though, the article is just written so two writers have something to debate. If anybody really checked out NASCAR.com, which I doubt anyone here does, you would see similar articles like this about a number of topics.

IndyCar has no business on high banked ovals? They totally haven't been visiting them since the 1970s. Rolling Eyes

NASCAR belongs on road courses as much as it does on short tracks. But I can see why NASCAR doesn't want to go to road courses, because they have right turns, braking zones, are more difficult to drive and more exciting than the high-banked, almost flat-out cookie cutter tracks.

I loved that 81 lap green flag run at Sonoma and wish that went green the whole way, because Truex might have won the race being totally awesome and doing it on a trick strategy.

Get rid of road courses, and that's another reason for me to not watch NASCAR anymore

That race stunned me, I wasn't expecting a Green flag run to last that long.

Just because they have been doing it since the 70's doesn't make it right. Indy Cars should only belong on tracks where they are not racing in huge packs.

I would like to see about 8 to 10 road courses a year, but I think (personally) they need to improve on the racing quality when they go to these road courses. I haven't enjoyed them as much the last few years. Just my opinion though.

Thinking about it all of the sudden, I think another reason would be nothing to do with the racing. I miss the days where Scott Pruett, Boris Said (in a competitive ride), and other ringers had competitive rides.

And last of all, I still think Indycar should be at the high bank ovals. I would love them to see them return to Michigan, Chicagoland, and Texas (race is up the air next year apparently).

I think Griffin said what I wanted to say already. I'd love to see one or two more road races on the schedule, but not so many that they take up the majority of it.

I'm not sure about a dirt race like some have said, but if ARCA can do it, I don't see why NASCAR can't.

I could be wrong, but I think those ARCA cars are abit lighter then the COTs.

Then they should build a car for it. Teams already build cars for certain tracks. Why not build a dirt car? Maybe they could turn Tony Stewart's Prelude into a points event for Cup?
