BREAKING: Matt Kenseth OUT of RFR for 2013; Stenhouse IN
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- NASCAR points leader Matt Kenseth is leaving Roush Fenway Racing at the end of the season, and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. will be promoted to his seat in the Sprint Cup Series.
There was widespread speculation last weekend at Sonoma that Kenseth was leaving to join Joe Gibbs Racing, but Kenseth declined before Sunday's race to discuss his future with the organization he has been with for all but one of his 452 career starts.
Roush announced Tuesday that Kenseth is moving on at the end of the year, without disclosing a reason.
"I'd like to thank Matt Kenseth for his many years of loyal service," team co-owner Jack Roush said in a statement. "Matt has been an integral part of this organization for well over a decade, and we are extremely appreciative of his accomplishments and contributions to the team, and will always consider him a part of the Roush Fenway family."
It appears Kenseth is headed to JGR for either Joey Logano's seat in the No. 20 Toyota, or a fourth car. Team president J.D. Gibbs did not respond to a request for a comment Tuesday morning, and said at Sonoma he could not talk about Kenseth.
Either way, it will be a tremendous change for Kenseth, who has been in the No. 17 Ford his entire career. Kenseth has won 22 Cup races, including two Daytona 500s, and the 2003 championship driving for Roush. In the Nationwide Series, Kenseth has won 26 races driving for Roush.
His relationship with owner Jack Roush and current general manager Robbie Reiser dates to 1997, when Kenseth first drove Reiser's No. 17 entry. Reiser then became Kenseth's crew chief at Roush in 2000, Kenseth's rookie season.
"Matt and I broke into this sport together, learned the ropes and were able to bring home a championship," said Reiser. "Over the 20 years we have worked with each other, Matt has been a fierce competitor and become a close friend, not only for me, but as a mentor to young drivers like Ricky. I wish Matt nothing but the best for the next phase of his career, and know that we'll remain close."
Kenseth's car has had sponsorship woes the last few years, and Roush is funding a large portion of this year's schedule himself for the 40-year-old Kenseth. The organization dropped David Ragan and its fourth team because of a lack of sponsorship at the end of last season, and also ponied up significant money to re-sign Carl Edwards last season. Roush also signed Greg Biffle to a contract extension last season.
But the team desperately needs a slot for the 24-year-old Stenhouse, who is locked into a long-term contract but has nowhere to go in Roush's Cup lineup. The organization has a similar problem with 2011 Daytona 500 winner Trevor Bayne, who is also in a long-term contract and had his Nationwide Series team shuttered earlier this season because of no funding.
Although Stenhouse will be far cheaper than Kenseth in terms of salary, no reason was given for the split.
"We feel that he is not only a key piece of our team's future, but a key piece of the future of the sport," Roush said of Stenhouse. "Roush Fenway is an organization with a wonderful past and present, as well as an extremely promising future, and I can't think of a better candidate than Ricky to usher in the next era of success for the team."

This is huge news. I cannot believe Kenseth is actually leaving. I figured Kenseth would be with RFR his entire career. Speculation is Kenseth goes to JGR, either taking Logano's spot or a fourth team. If he goes to JGR, it'll look weird seeing Kenseth driving a Toyota...

I think its great he can move on and find something new...but I dont know where. As for the Ricky Stenhouse part, I guess he deserves a shot in a cup car by now.

Wow, this is very surprising news. After watching only Matt drive the #17 since I first started watching it's going to be bizarre.

Well he has been at that team for quite a long time, but then again look at how long Jeff Gordon has been at Hendrick Motorsports now (20 years I think).

WELL, GEE.
I was saddened to hear this, because 1) one of the only remaining long-standing team-driver relationships in the series is gone, and 2) this throws away any chance Roush had of bringing back the #6. Although I am also curious to see how well Stenhouse does next year.

Wouldn't shock me if Stenhouse races the 6 and the 17 isn't used.
Re: BREAKING: Matt Kenseth OUT of RFR for 2013; Stenhouse IN
Apparently, Kenseth may not just be looking at Logano's 20 car next year. There may be a possibility that he could take over the 39 car from Ryan Newman as well.
Re: BREAKING: Matt Kenseth OUT of RFR for 2013; Stenhouse IN
At least Newman gets a yearly win. Took Logano 3 years to win something. Kenseth should set his eyes on that 20 car, Could actually bring it back to the level Stewart had it at.BWardboy88 wrote:Apparently, Kenseth may not just be looking at Logano's 20 car next year. If Roush equipment stays good expect Stenhouse to do average, If they falter expect Stenhouse to have the highest repair bill on the year.

Dangit! First Martin snd now Kenseth! I don't enjoy watching my favorite drivers drive Toyotas.
Anyways, I'm rather surprised. It'll be wierd watching him drive a car that's not Roush's 17 Ford.

You're not the only one.
If he goes to JGR, they will go to a fourth. Despite what people want JGR is more than likely keeping Joey. Although, I wouldn't be surprised to see him move to Stewart-Haas.

The last guy who won a Cup title under a real points system, and a two-time Daytona 500 winner, including the most recent one, having trouble finding a ride with a top team?
Yeah, right.

I mean, Ricky Stenhouse actually does have potential, but he's been having some terrible luck in the #6 car in Nationwide lately. I would have rather them take out Greg Biffle instead of Kenseth. Kenseth is the better driver out of the 2. I hope Gibbs does the smart thing and kick out LOLgano and put Kenseth in.

Stenhouse has money. Roush needs money for Cup. See where this pairing works?
Nascarboy426 wrote: 2) this throws away any chance Roush had of bringing back the #6. Although I am also curious to see how well Stenhouse does next year.
It'll be the 6. Roush would probably prefer the 6 over the 17.
If Allmendinger gets shafted for Kenseth it'll be understandable (since Kenseth is one of the best drivers in NASCAR) but tragic, because there are much crappier drivers in Cup (Logano, Ragan, Logano) or that have outlived their presence on the grid at the top level of stock cars (Kvapil, Reutimann, Labonte, Burton), whereas guys with potential and speed (Allmendinger, Smith) are stuck with bad cars.
Allmendinger and Keselowski are probably going to spend the rest of this year preparing for next year, and then next year they'll be stuck as the number two team to Roush, essentially filling the space currently occupied by Ambrose and Almirola.

If Logano stays and Kenseth goes to a 4th JGR car, this is what I'm seeing.
>Kenseth goes to JGR but stays in the #17, meaning.
>Stenhouse Jr. competes for ROTY (against no-one at the moment) in the #6, which would hopefully allow,
>Trevor Bayne to finally compete a full season in the Nationwide #6.
If Kenseth goes to the #20, then Logano goes to either the 18 or 20 in Nationwide and compete there full-time.

If Bayne goes to the 6 in nationwide, Im not so sure that Angus Steakhouse will be willing to sponsor Trevor for an entire season, but they should be willing to take a chance.
Back to Kenseth, im not sure he would fit in at Jgr or that Joe Gibbs will give up on Kyle or Joey. I think he would fit in better at Stewart-Haas. I believe Sten house might just turn out to be like David Ragan and just perform badly in perfectly good equipment.

Stenhouse is more familiar with racing with the Number 6 on his door.

While I would bet my money on Kenseth going to JGR, what about Andretti? The two newest stories on Jayski are Andretti thinking about starting a Cup team (though it is old news), and Kenseth saying he has already made a deal with a team. Could Kenseth be going to driver for Michael Andretti?

That's a good possibility. Start up the team, having a champion on board to use his provisionals if needed, and to bring well needed knowledge. I could see that happening

It just would not make sense for him to go to a start up team. I don't see it happening, but that's just my opinion.

My opinions regarding Matt's options:
JGR: Replacing Logano would be the best thing that could ever happen to Matt's career. But it's not going to happen. They are not going to replace a 22 year-old with a 40 year-old. If he goes to Gibbs, it'll be with a fourth team, where he'll basically be a seat-warmer for Darrell Wallace, Jr..
Penske: Not going to happen. Allmendinger's gone by the end of this year. (Two top tens by midseason? And to think we all thought he had potential.) But the #22 will likely go to Hornish.
Andretti Autosport: Not the worst possible move, but it will relegate his career to "Bill Elliott at Evernham" status. Not good if he ever wants to win a second title.
SHR: Best realistic hope. At least he could make the chase consistently.
MWR: No room at the inn.
EGR: Terrible career move, but I could see them firing McMurray.
However this turns out, Matt's days as a serious title contender are over as of this week.
Regarding the 2013 ROTY situation, I'm pretty sure Danica will run for it as well. So we'll basically have a rerun of 2009.

You've got to give AJ more credit. In 2010, Brad got two top 10's, he's still at Penske. Roger isn't the type of driver to just dump somebody just like that. Also, AJ's crew chief was with Brad last year in NNS, they got off to a really slow start. Give it some time, they should be okay.

Brad was in his first full season. A.J.'s in his sixth. And even David freakin' Stremme managed to not wreck at Michigan while he was at Penske. (Well, in one of his starts, anyway.)

AJ's like Gordon this season. When he has a good run going, something happens to ruin it.Spen wrote:Brad was in his first full season. A.J.'s in his sixth. And even David freakin' Stremme managed to not wreck at Michigan while he was at Penske. (Well, in one of his starts, anyway.)

The dark side? Mr. Roush, you are not Luke Skywalker. If you were, you'd have crashed the Millenium Falcon long before reaching the Death Star.

McMurray would honestly leave EGR before they fire him, as would Montoya. That team is terrible, and you're right in saying it would be a terrible move for Kenseth to go there.
Kenseth, please replace Logano in the 20. I know you're probably going to Andretti, but that 20 car would extend your career quite a bit!

Teressa Earnhardt is the problem. Chip Ganassi and Felix Stabatas are fine.
