Pole Qualifying

The 109-car entry list was split into three 25-minute sessions. Herbie Finkelberg and Trey Ashby (WHAT!?) were on top of the charts after the first session, but they were bumped out of the field by Ashley Tucker and David Krikorian in the second session. Tucker was the only driver to break into the 19-second bracket in pole qualifying.

MINI-INDY 500 FRONT ROW

1. #57- Ashley Tucker (19.971)
2. #32- David Krikorian (20.101)

The rest of the field will take part in three qualifying races, with the top 13 in each transferring to the 500. There will also be a provisional spot for the driver highest in points that fails to make it in. This means that 42 cars will start the race.

So, if my calculations are correct:

107 divided by 3 would equal 35 cars per qualifier?

Probably not - they'll be spread out randomly if history is any indication.

So right now we have three cars definitely in the race. Tucker, Krikorian, and Ebenezer Quiggles, who currently gets the points provisional.

Qualifying Races

The starting lineups for the 75-lap qualifiers were decided by a random draw.

Race 1

Yes, only 3 cars finished on the lead lap. Herbie Finkelberg thoroughly destroyed the field, and if he wasn't already a favorite to win the race, he probably is now.

The only caution flew at the end of the first lap, when Ike Durbin got into Rence Brown, who had put himself into the turn 4 wall. Todd Wodarczyk piled into the back of the #86.

Libby Bell continued her miserable luck by blowing her clutch. Her hopes of snagging the provisional spot were dashed when points leader Ebenezer Quiggles, Jr. struggled all night, and got the provisional for himself.

Trey Ashby was still as fast as he was in pole qualifying. A slow pitstop briefly took him out of a transfer spot, but he made it up after the rest of the field pitted.

The FAC cars were surprisingly competitive, as well as debutante Vincenzo Focesato.

Race 2

Rachel Rainsford won when she actually decided to be fast for once, and there's no better time to do that than when you have to race your way in.

Both of the MT Motorsports cars made it in, and Ben Atkins avenges his teammate Jacob Eichholtz's DNQ by putting himself in the race.

Jason Teller and Holden Roberts were their usual slow selves (Xenos is reportedly not happy with Teller's lack of results this year...) Benji Flynn, who had been very fast on the short tracks earlier this year, was nowhere all night. Nami Mura's DNQ means that Kurt Walker will be the only representative of his own team on the grid.

Bigsby Foote is the only PSI representative to qualify, but I'm curious to see if the team will switch him out for Libby Bell...

I'm sad that Steve Johnson got wrecked by Scott Morales on the first lap. Johnson's car was one of Nick Howard's backup cars, but the team covered the numbers with ugly duct tape boxes and painted a 60S over them.

Race 3

Dan Richards, Bob Stephans, and Laura Cyrus fought for the lead for the whole caution-free race, but after pitstops, Dale Hill came rocketing to the front and won quite easily.

Joe Olenick and J.W. Lester will be making their first starts in ARLA competition. Former Rockford 200 winner Rush McCloud made it as well.

Tiffany Matthews drew last place for the start, but she made it all the way to the last transfer spot.

Mixed bag for Matthews Motorsports: Tiffany squeaks in, Rogers not so much:
Matthews Motorsports had high hopes coming into the qualifying races of the Mini Indy 500.

Though series regular Tiffany Matthews and ARLA newcomer and Dash Cup part-timer Kellan Rogers had less than stellar pole qualifying efforts, the prevailing belief in the garage was that it would be in the races where the two would show their stuff.

Those thoughts were reinforced after Rogers drew the pole for Race 1. Unfortunately for her, her No. 106 I.W. Eagle Lenard sunk like a stone through the standings, and she came home in a disappointing 32nd place, nine laps off the pace and nowhere near a transfer spot.

"I sucked," she said. "I don't know what happened, but we just couldn't get anything out of this car. It's disappointing, but at the same time this was a good learning experience, and I thank Ryan for the chance to try to get his car in the field."

Rogers, substituting for team owner Ryan Matthews for this race as he's in Wales for the TM Master Cup event, will return to Dash Cup for its next two races in Japan before embarking on her RROL campaign.

As for Tiffany, her qualifying race was a direct mirror of her sister's - she drew shotgun in the field and would start 36th on the grid. Astute observers would recall the last time she started dead last in a qualifying race - last year at Rockford, where she didn't make up the spots needed to get into the field.

This time was a different story, as Matthews climbed her way out of the hole and finished 13th - in the last transfer spot.

"Whew," she said after her race. "When I pulled pill 36 I thought I was doomed. Granted, I lucked out having the likes of Dudding and Doom-O in my race, but there were still plenty of good cars out there. But hey, I'm in the race, so I can't complain.

"I feel bad for Kell though," she added. "She wanted to get in this race more than anything, and it hurt me to see her struggle like she did. But she's gonna stay here for the race, so she'll have a chance to learn more about these cars."

Ashby shocks field with fast speed
Trey Ashby was able to finish 4th in his q race after nearly qualifying in the front row in his qualifying session with Herbie Finkelberg. "I gotta say, I was so excited, I thought I'd be on the front row. That pitstop could have gone better but hey, I'm in the race." Ashby had pulled 4th on the starting grid and was able to rally back to that spot once the field made pitstops

Griffin DNQ's; Still able to hold a smile

Ryan Griffin's shot at qualifying for the Mini Indy 500 never got traction literally. On Lap 23 of his qualifier, the pinion gear which is housed in the rear differential broke leaving the #70 with no power to the rear wheels.

Griffin was able to get the car back to the garage but was visually disappointed when he spoke to a reporter after exiting the car.

"What can I say? I'm upset. You know coming in you have to race you're way in and when it doesn't happen it hurts. But, you can't do anything about parts."

Griffin who was wearing "John Lennon" syle sunglasses and sporting a mop top was asked about the look and if the rumors about a concert happening the day before the Mini Indy 500 were true.

"Oh, it's true alright. Jim [More], myself, and two of the guys from Great Lakes Motorsports are going to perform as the Beatles tonight. We were also lucky enough to get a couple of other driver to perform as well as opening acts. So, remember to be there."

Exciting night for MT Motorsports as both Cranston and Halks make it into the Mini-Indy 500

After his first career ARLA Elite Series podium finish at Mosport, Lane Cranston was hoping that his sudden bit of luck wouldn't run out.

No one was guaranteed a spot in the inaugural Mini-Indy 500, and after failing to qualify on the front row for the race, Cranston had to go through the qualifying races. He was entered in Q-race 2, and drew the seventh starting position. Cranston made the most of his good starting position, finishing fourth in the 75-lap race, easily making the field.

"I am so happy we made it in so easily," Cranston said. "I drew seventh for the grid, and I knew I had to make the most of it. We had a good car, and I was able to pass three other cars, and get in the show. Forget finishing well, I want to win this race. I think we can."

Meanwhile, MT Motorsports' one-off entry, driven by 19-year-old Arkansas native Jon Halks, making his first-ever start in a stock car race, also managed to get into the field. Halks happened to be in Q-race 2 as well, drawing the 15th starting position, and finishing 11th, the last car on the lead lap, two spots ahead of the final transfer position.

"This is wild, what a night," Halks said. "I've never raced a stock car before, but we tested this one before coming up here, and I thought it could make the show. I don't know if it's a car that can win, but it's a 500-lap race, and anything can happen. The goal is to finish high."

MT Motorsports owner Fred Caldwell had a smile on his face that never left after the second Q-race.

"Both of our cars made it in, and Lane looked great," Caldwell said. "I haven't really looked forward to a race yet this season because our cars haven't been good enough for a really high finish, because Talladega was a surprise before the crash, and, obviously, no one expected things to go the way they did at Mosport last week, but I've got two cars in this race, and we're really looking forward to this one, because I think Lane can win. I really think he can. And I think Jon can finish high. We're all very excited about tomorrow night."

(OOC: it's Fochesato)

Vincenzo Fochesato Estatic After Making the Show

Vincenzo Fochesato climbed out of his car wearing a big smile after finishing 7th in the first qualifying race for ARLA's inaugural Miny-Indy 500. After congratulations from his crew chief and father, Giuseppe Fochesato, he finally calmed down enough to say this to reporters,

"I still can't believe it! I was obviously hoping I could qualify, but I wasn't expecting to be as fast as I was! Focus Autosports may not have a ton of money, but my guys behind the wall and in the garage don't care! They gave me an amazing car, and I can't thank them enough! I'm really looking forward to the race!"

The Italian-born Michigan native has previously never been heard of outside of southern Michigan short tracks, where he has been very successful in late model competition.

Kastapolous in, but Gavin DeGray will have to wait for Rockford to try and make his ARLA Elite Series Debut.
"Well, no question we have a talented field set up for the race... real shame for the guys in the shop, they worked their tails off. Well, hopefully we'll have something good in store for us sooner or later."
Meanwhile, Kastapolous was estatic.
"Really loving our season as a whole and just making it into the race this time around man, im just pumped! Its a shame that Gav didnt make it but hey, imma try and win this one for you bud. FAC finds redemption as both cars make Indy

After failing to qualify for the Karjala Grand Prix, FAC Motorsports find redemption by getting both Frank and Nick Azure into the Mini Indy 500. "This is a big accomplishment for this team" Frank Azure stated. "To have both our cars in this race is a great feeling. Now hopefully we can complete all 500 laps."

Nick Azure, who has failed to finish has only two starts this season, was excited about getting the final transfer spot in race 1. "I can't I actually qualified. I can't explain how happy I am right now. I just want to thank Frank and all the people who worked on both of our cars. I can't wait until race day."

PSI Plans To Put Best Foote Forward at Mini-Indy

Despite speculation to the contrary, PSI plans to keep Bigsby Foote in the seat he earned at the Mini-Indy qualifying race.
"We've heard talk that we might be putting Libby Bell in Bigsby's spot. I can confirm that that is untrue," PSI owner William Power stated. "Those who know me know that I always ride the hot hand and right now, Libby is cold as ice. Putting her in that car now would just not be prudent at this juncture. Bigsby earned that spot and he's going to keep it. It's not like he's way out of contention-- he's 9th overall for Pete's sake-- just 30 back of Libby. And I have faith in Bigsby that he'll give us another good showing. Libby and her crew need to work out what gone wrong for themselves," Power continued. "Also, I haven't forgotten about the Toad-al Auto Racing Decency Society either. I haven't had much time to formulate a plan of action, but I have something up my sleeve. SASQWatch isn't happy that we changed logos on the car. I don't know who gave the order to do so, but it wasn't me and the sponsor is not pleased. Can't say as I blame them."

Teller responds to Xenos on his poor performances

Jason Teller, driver of the #47 Arquin Xenos was interviewed yesterday about his poor qualifying results and how his team has been feeling about his results. "I know i haven't been doing my best in the #47, but luck just hasn't been on my side. I'm a good driver, i have talent, but it's hard to show those talents when there are idiots boucing around the track, smashing you up and taking away your chance to earn a victory. Personally I hope Xenos will hold on to me, and if not, so be it. I could use a break. If they did replace me, i'd like Flock to take over the #47. He's a good driver, i enjoyed his driving when he replaced me last year after my injury. Hopefully i get some good results soon."

Teller is far behind his teammates in points, and has not been able to show his talents that well, with low finishes, and a DNQ today in qualifying for the Mini-Indy 500.
