Too much racing under the lights?

Post by BWard on Thu Apr 12, 2012 4:01 pm

A quote from NASCAR.com:

"It will be the first time the Sprint Cup drivers will hit the track on Saturday night rather than the usual Sunday afternoon and is followed by the next majority of night races at Richmond, Darlington and Charlotte. In total, there are 10 night races on the 2012 schedule, but is it becoming too much of a good thing?"

Not at the expense of local Saturday night racing, it doesn't.

Because back then, not many tracks had lights to use at night. Now that many tracks have them today, they can race at night. Another stupid NASCAR.com article. Simple as that.

Toss in Talladega and a Road Course and I think that'll be ok with me.

I personally think NASCAR should have a few Monday night races each year. Look at how successful Daytona was.

I didn't really like having the Daytona 500 on a Monday. Razz

Anyway, I actually really enjoy Saturday night racing.

Rykia, there was a Cup race run on Friday back in 2001, at New Hampshire. Wasn't at night, granted, but still...

Too many night races? Maybe a few. Darlington above all does NOT need to be at night.

When you're sitting in the stands in Texas and the temp is pushing triple digits you tend to welcome a night race. lol!

Please tell me you're joking.

Putting lights up at Darlington was like a breath of fresh air. Before, they were struggling to fill the stands. What did the track owners and NASCAR do? Cut back to just one race and added lights. Not to mention they brought back the name "Southern 500".

Those races have been jammed packed every race since.

Apparently I'm in the minority on this one. I've never much cared for night racing. For me, the best races are ones where the track continuesly changes as the race goes on, giving us a variety of 'comers and goers' to watch. Unless we're at Atlanta, you don't get that with night racing. The cars that unloaded strong will be the ones running up front all day, and the cooler temps result in even worse aero push than normal. Then we end up with races like Richmond '08, where Denny Hamlin leads 381 out of the first 382 laps. (Yeah, we got a crazy ending, but that's just because God got a little nasty.)

Personally, if I were making the schedule, the only night races would be the summer Bristol race (it's tradition) and the World 600 (which at least has plenty of day racing mixed in to make it interesting). And Darlington should never be run at night, period. It's *supposed* to be run in unbearable heat.

Yeah but I remember back in I wanna say 05 or 07 they were seriously considering running Friday night Cup races, with the Busch races running Saturday nights.

Darlington night racing = Great.

A night race won't give you a good race at a crappy track.

I hate races on Saturday nights, I'm frequently out...much prefer a sunday race because I can almost always watch it as it happens. Night races, however, do add a new feel to the track, so I see both sides.

But if they do it, the safe way to do it is holidays. Daytona on Presidesnts Day Monday, the 600 on Memorial Day, and the Southern 500 where it properly belongs. Labor Day.

But allow a week off, unless, like in Darlington's case the next race being virturally up the highway in Richmond, where you can allow ample time to make up a race in case mother nature decides to raise hell

If you want to bring back a big 4 race deal, and make them the Monday races to make them stand out, then I say make the 400 on the 4th of July (yeah, I know, it moves around on the calendar, plus you would be talking about having 1 track having two huge races). Would say either make Indy one of the other big four (who knows, that race is usually a snoozer, needs something to usually spice it up), or Talladega (go back to the original premise of what the Winston Million based its grand slam on, with Richest, Fastest, Longest, and Oldest), but neither have lights, and I doubt a Monday afternoon race would fly on a non-holiday weekend.

Why, so the fans can suffer from the unbearable temperatures as well as the drivers and crews?

Sorry. Gonna have to disagree with you on that front. I just don't see the logic in that. By running Darlington at night, the temperatures are more comfortable for the fans, drivers and pit crews, and it seems to produce better racing.

Races in hot places should be run at night so the temperature is bareable. Having run many karting races myself, it gets VERY not in the car, even an open air go kart travelling at 70 mph, the wind doesn't really help. I cannot imagine what it would be like to run Bristol in August in a closed car in the afternoon.
