NASCAR with other points Empty NASCAR with other points

Post by tommykl Sat Mar 03, 2012 11:41 am

Basically, the point of this is to reward consistency and high finishes to get a champion instead of just one of the two. What I'll do is re-do every season of NASCAR with the same points system as in Formula 1 at the time, except for 1949-1959, where F1 awarded a point to the driver who got the fastest lap, as NASCAR didn't record fastest laps then. The extra point will, like in 1960, awarded to sixth place.

So, without further ado, here is 1949.

1. Red Byron - 24 (2 wins, 2 3rds)
2. Bob Flock - 22 (2 wins, 1 2nd)
3. Lee Petty - 20 (1 win, 2 2nds)
4. Fonty Flock - 13 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
5. Ray Erickson - 10 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
6. Curtis Turner- 8 (1 win, 3 9ths)
7. Jim Roper - 8 (1 win, 1 15th)
8. Jack White - 8 (1 win)
9. Tim Flock - 8 (1 2nd)
10. Frank Mundy - 7 (1 3rd)
11. Bill Blair - 7 (3 5ths, 1 6th)
12. Gober Sosebee - 6 (1 2nd, 1 8th)
13. Dick Linder - 6 (1 2nd, 1 20th)
14. Bill Rexford - 6 (1 3rd)
15. Sam Rice - 6 (2 4ths)
=. Clyde Minter - 6 (2 4ths)
17. Glenn Dunnaway - 4 (1 3rd, 1 7th)
18. Billy Rafter - 4 (1 3rd)
19. Joe Littlejohn - 3 (1 4th)
=. Mike Eagan - 3 (1 4th)
21. Bill Snowden - 3 (1 5th, 1 6th, 1 7th)
22. Sara Christian - 3 (1 5th, 1 6th, 1 12th)
23. Herb Thomas - 2 (1 5th)
24. Archie Smith - 1 (1 6th, 1 10th)
25. Frank Christian - 1 (1 6th)
=. Frankie Schneider - 1 (1 6th)
=. Lloyd Moore - 1 (1 6th)
=. Roy Hall - 1 (1 6th)

Red Byron keeps his championship, but it's a lot closer than in real life. The only drive to finish in the top three 4 times, he was the favourite and his title isn't surprising. A few major changes however: Lee Petty is demoted to third thanks to Bob Flock's two wins to Petty's one and the loss of two top tens who ended up outside the points, and Bill Blair, whose consistent top-six finishing was impressive, but his absence of any top-4 finish prevented him from really challenging the leading group.

Any questions? Comments? Criticism? Post it below, I'm always open to suggestions.

I was going to do something similar with my league's points system, but couldn't get motivated enough to try it. This seems pretty interesting though, I definitely want to see how it turns out

I did something like this on Racing Reference, but with modern F1 poins used throughout al F1 seasons. Using that on NASCAR though should yield interesting results.

1950 keeps the same point system as in 1949 (8-6-4-3-2-1). 218 drivers started at least one race, and 49 scored points. The fact that every race was worth the same amount of points and the small amount of drivers scoring points every race meant we have our first change of champion.

1. Curtis Turner - 45 (4 wins, 1 2nd, 1 3rd)
2. Lee Petty - 36 (1 win, 1 2nd, 2 3rds)
3. Lloyd Moore - 35 (1 win, 2 2nds, 3 3rds)
4. Dick Linder - 34 (3 wins, 1 2nd, 1 3rd)
5. Fireball Roberts - 25 (1 win, 2 2nds, 1 3rd)
6. Bill Blair - 24 (1 win, 2 2nds)
7. Bill Rexford - 23 (1 win, 1 3rd)
8. Herb Thomas - 19 (1 win, 2 3rds)
9. Tim Flock - 18 (1 win)
10. Jimmy Florian - 16 (1 win, 1 3rd)
11. Red Byron - 13 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
12. Chuck Mahoney - 12 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
13. Fonty Flock - 11 (1 win)
14. Buck Baker - 10 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
15. Glenn Dunnaway - 10 (1 2nd)
16. Johnny Mantz - 8 (1 win, 1 10th)
17. Harold Kite - 8 (1 win, 1 12th)
18. Leon Sales - 8 (1 win, 1 21st)
19. Clyde Minter - 8 (1 3rd)
20. Weldon Adams - 7 (1 3rd)
21. Bob Flock - 6 (1 2nd, 1 7th)
22. Jim Paschal - 6 (1 2nd, 1 9th)
23. Jack Smith - 6 (1 2nd, 1 27th, 1 29th)
24. Bucky Sager - 6 (1 2nd, 1 27th)
25. Red Harvey - 6 (1 2nd)
=. Ted Swaim - 6 (1 2nd)
27. Dick Burns - 5 (1 4th, 1 5th)
28. Buck Barr - 4 (1 3rd, 1 10th)
29. Ewell Weddle - 4 (1 3rd, 1 13th)
30. Art Lamey - 4 (2 5ths)
31. Al Gross - 3 (1 4th, 1 18th)
32. Jimmie Lewallen - 3 (1 4th, 1 21st)
33. Chuck James - 3 (1 4th)
34. Gayle Warren - 3 (1 5th, 1 6th)
35. Jack White - 2 (1 5th, 1 7th, 1 20th)
36. Ray Duhigg - 2 (1 5th, 1 7th, 1 23rd)
37. Bill Snowden - 2 (1 5th, 1 10th)
38. Neil Cole - 2 (1 5th, 1 18th)
39. Jack Reynolds - 2 (1 5th, 1 24th)
40. J.C. Van Landingham - 2 (1 5th)
41. Frank Mundy - 1 (1 6th, 1 7th)
42. George Hartley - 1 (1 6th, 1 10th, 4 11ths)
43. Dick Clothier - 1 (1 6th, 1 10th, 1 12th)
44. Pepper Cunningham - 1 (1 6th, 1 10th)
45. Paul Parks - 1 (1 6th, 1 12th)
46. Carl Renner - 1 (1 6th, 1 13th)
47. Gene Austin - 1 (1 6th, 1 17th)
48. Herschel Buchanan - 1 (1 6th, 1 39th)
49. Bill Long - 1 (1 6th)

Curtis Turner was always going to win this. With four wins in the first nine races followed by two more podiums, he still won without scoring in the last seven rounds. He only scored seven times, which prevented him from finishing higher than fifth in real life, and Lee Petty's ten races in the points are a new record. In real life, Bill Rexford used his 11 top-ten finishes in high-scoring races to win the title, but only two podiums prevented him from having a real shot at the championship. 1951 will be run over 41 races, and it will take a long time to do it, even more when I reach the 60's, so this will be done in a matter of months probably. In the meantime, feel free to predict a few champions to keep things interesting.

There will be something really surprising in the mid 90s-2000s. I just don't know what it is. Junior Johnson will win one under this format I predict.

I think Edwards would have the 2008 title with his 9 victories, however Jimmie Johnson was really consistent so it may go to him.

Made up the 2012 Sprint Cup points standings with 2012 Formula 1 points.
For the Fontana race, I only gave half points because in Formula 1, if less than 75% of the race is completed, than only half points are rewarded.

NASCAR with other points Empty Re: NASCAR with other points

Post by tommykl Tue May 01, 2012 1:04 pm

Now, it's 1951. The sheer amount of races this year meant that an all-time high of 377 drivers started at least one race, with an equally impressive 89 of them scoring at least one top-six finish. The points system is still the same (8-6-4-3-2-1). At first, Marshall Teague led the championship, after winning the first round at Daytona Beach and finishing third in the second race. He didn't start the third, leaving Tim Flock to win the race and take the championship lead with 14 points to Teague's 12. Fonty Flock was also quite close, on 10, and the three exchanged the championship lead for the first part of the year, and while Teague kept piling on the race wins (4 in the first 9 races), he was very inconsistent and the Flocks scored consistent podiums. Out of the six races that Teague didn't win in the first ten races, Fonty and Tim won two each, with the other two going to defending champion Curtis Turner who, despite his three wins, wouldn't be a factor this year.

However, Teague scored almost no points apart from his wins, which meant that, after ten races, Tim Flock led the championship with 45 points to 36 for Teague and 35 for Fonty. Teague would make an effort to claw back some of the gap, scoring 13 points in the four next races, including a fifth win at Grand Rapids, but he eventually had to give up, and after his last win, he only started five races, scoring just one point.

This left Tim and Fonty to fight for the championship pretty much unopposed, as they were the only drivers more-or-less consistently at the front. The two took turns to dominate the field in cycles. However, Herb Thomas, who had been a regular points finisher earlier on, without really making a mark apart from a win at Pittsburgh, wame into action at the Southern 500. He won the race as well as four of the next seven. Fonty Flock, who had won five races in that time span, led the championship with 94 points, with Tim on 84, having won just three races in those races and Herb Thomas on 81. With ten races left, it would be close.

With Fonty not scoring in any of the next four, it was the perfect opportunity for Tim and Thomas to make up the lost ground. Amazingly though, both of them lost all of their consistency, and only Tim was able to score in those races, albeit with a victory at Shippenville. This got him to within two points of Fonty, but Fonty responded by winning the Wilkes 200 with Tim only fourth. Fonty's win allowed him to become the first driver to score over 100 points in a single season. He further extended his lead with third place at Jacksonville, with Thomas winning the race. However, despite there being three races left, two of them would be held on the same day. With Thomas 17 points behind Fonty, Thomas was eliminated from the championship race, leaving only Fonty and Tim to fight for the title.

Fonty did not race at Atlanta, deciding to compete in the less competitive race at Gardena. While Tim won his race, Fonty retired from his, and was only classified in eleventh place. Going to the last race at Mobile, Fonty led Tim 106 to 103. Frank Mundy won the race, his third and last career win, with Tim in second place, meaning that Fonty had to finish either third or fourth. He did, in fact, finish in fourth position, securing the title. The brothers tied for points, but Fonty won 8 races to Tim's 7.

NASCAR with other points Empty Re: NASCAR with other points

Post by Spen Wed May 02, 2012 1:49 am

Okay, I'm officially sold on F1 points. That was downright awesome. I did that season in Latford points, which also gave the title to Fonty, but with far less excitement. Tim skipping two races basically handed Fonty the title on a silver platter.

Fonty completed far more than 2788 laps, though. The record's very incomplete. My guestimate figure when I tallied up that season came up with roughly 5385.

I guess I should probably get back to 'Latfordizing' '52 one of these days.

I know this is an F1 points topic, but has anyone besides Spen tried any other points systems? I'm curious to see if as a group we could figure out the best system to use.

Also kudos for pouring through all that data

I can't believe I'm gonna say this, but I think Ryan Newman will win the 2003 title. He had eight wins that year, mostly due to his ungodly fuel mileage.

NASCAR with other points Nation10
2012 Nationwide points after Talladega.
Ricky Stenhouse Jnr. and Elliott Sadler are looking like dominating the series. Sadler had a strong start to the season with a top 3 in the first 4 races, but in the last 4 races the tide has turned with Stenhouse Jnr. now becoming dominate.
NASCAR with other points Trucks10
2012 Truck points after Kansas.
James Buescher and Timothy Peters are having a close battle. Daytona winner John King has only scored once since his win (9th at Martinsville) and could face falling out of the top 5 in points at Charlotte.

These two tables also prove why Trucks is more enjoyable than Nationwide.
Nationwide: 8 races, 16 point scorers.
Trucks: 4 races, 19 point scorers.
