Sato to Rahal.

Post by Alta on Sat Feb 04, 2012 5:22 am

Bobby Rahal moved one step closer to his full-time return to the IndyCar Series on Friday when Takuma Sato became the lead driver for his team for the 2012 season.

Sato was formally introduced as driver for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing by Honda at an event in Tokyo.

Back in Indianapolis, team co-owner Rahal viewed it as just another piece in the months’ long process to get back into the series after a three-year absence.

“We’ve been working on this for more than six months, and getting the driver named is just another check in a box into where we are headed,” Rahal said in a phone interview.

And where does Rahal want to be?

“Our goal is to be a major force in the series,” he said.

Rahal’s last full-time entry in IndyCar was the 2008 season, when Ryan Hunter-Reay finished seventh in the final series standings. It marked the 11th consecutive year an RLL driver finished in the top 10 in points.

Rahal took a gamble. Take a fast driver 70% of the time who has a tendency to wreck.

I am expecting Sato to win a race this year. His F1 career might not have been particularly great, but IndyCar was the best choice for him to redeem himself.

He has the talent and speed to win, as shown in 2011, but always chokes when he is up front.

I am hoping he does win a race in 2012 though.

Not the best choice for Rahal, although Sato tends to be fast. If he works on his consistency, he'll be good for this year.

Sato could win a race... if he was still in KV equipment. Rahal/Letterman/Lanigan equipment is not gonna win.

Sato would've won multiple races behind the wheel of a McLaren, Ferrari, or even a Renault in the mid-2000s, not behind the wheel of a Honda that was good, but could only win under wacky circumstances (see Button's win in Hungary in '06).

Don't number the car with a #4 Razz

We all know what happened last time he had a 4 in his number.

The car will be #15 anyways...

Yeah, this was the worst kept secret ever, because Honda wanted Sato there.

This was confirmed by sources like two weeks ago too. I found it on SPEED's website, and posted it with a bunch of other stuff.
