Post by Mother of Invention Thu Jan 19, 2012 1:21 am

I'm curious to hear, who are some of the local drivers or drivers from your area that you look up too or watched/heard about growing up?

I was born and raised in Richmond, Virginia. Back before I was born, Central VA was a hotbed for racing, probably second best hotbed of racing behind Western North Carolina. We have a wonderful track called Southside, and back in the day you'd have Local heroes such as Tommy Ellis or the Flying 11 of Ray Hendrick (No relation to Rick), and Sonny Hutchens in the Zervekas 01 tearing it up. Those drivers weren't just Famous in Central Va, they were feared all across the south, especially that Flying 11. In the 80s you had Wayne Patterson dominating the scene along with Eddie Johnson and Roy Hendrick (Ray's kid). Then in the 90s you had the Grubb brothers, Brandon Butler, and some kid named Denny Hamlin, but he didn't amount to much.

Who are some of the local legends and rising stars from your area?

Can't say much about Rhode Island except for Mike Stefanik, however in North Carolina there's so many I can't count. In North Carolina, I was a huge fan of a driver named Travis Sharpe. He was a great driver in Late Models at Concord Motorsports Park (now Concord Speedway), however I haven't heard anything about him since he got into a car accident around '07 that put him in the ICU. At Bowman-Gray Stadium, you got the Myers brothers (Burt and Jason), Junior Miller, and Tim Brown. You either love these guys, or you hate them. You can't like both Miller and Myers, and you can't like both Brown and Myers.

In Cleveland, no one cares about local racing. The nearest track is either Sandusky Speedway, which is a good 55 minute drive or Nelsons Ledges which is father than that, There is some decrpit junk pit somewhere in Lorain county Ohio, which is closer than both tracks, but I don't think anyone races on it anymore.

The closest V8 supercars driver from me is Steven Johnson. He was born in Brisbane. Will Power was born and went to school at Toowoomba, the opposite way from my hometown to Brisbane. Ashley Walsh, the guy was going to get a wildcard spot into the Bathurst 1000 this year but didn't end up doing it, is the only notable driver that's in my hometown.

The only two local racing heroes we have in OKC are Lance Norick or Tyler Walker. Take your pick.

The big names I know of, growing up on the racing asphalt at Wall Stadium were the Blewett brothers (Johnny III, and Jimmy). Both were notorious modified drivers. I remember seeing pictures of Johnny Blewett back in the day run a few NASCAR Truck Series races but didn't too well. Jimmy's son, Jimmy IV, started racing quarter midgets while I was still racing them, on the same year his dad died, unfortunately, while racing his own brother for the lead at one race at Thompson. As for the drag racing side, an NHRA Pro Motorcycle racer named Eddie Kraywic (if that's how you spell his lat name) went to my high school long before I went there myself and has a couple of championship titles under his belt, including 2011. I don't know him well but I got to meet him once during the Summer Nationals at Englishtown and seemed like a nice guy. I think that's pretty much it with my personal local heroes.

From Altamont: The Phillpot brother's of Ryan and Justin were sucessful at Altamont from the Mini Trucks to Late Models. They both race in the Nascar West Series and have attempted the Toyota showdown a few times. Eric Holmes as well raced at Altamont in Late Model division and also race in the Nascar West Series

Big names: J.R. Hildebrand lives in Sausalito which is about 25-30 miles away from me, Townsend Bell lives in San Fransisco which is about 20 miles away.

My hometown heroes are David Reutimann (Zephyr Hills, Florida) and Joe Nemechek (Lakeland, Florida) granted they didn't do nothing special last year, I still like them.

Ricky Rudd grew up just down the road in Chesapeake and Bootie Barker graduated from ODU with a degree in mechanical engineering (same school and program I'm hoping to get into.) Elton Sawyer pretty much dominated the local racing scene in the 80's and he too was raised in Chesapeake. But what's really neat is that one of my top idols, Joe Weatherly, was born and raised here in Norfolk! I actually live within walking distance of his burial site; his headstone is shaped in the form of Riverside Speedway, where he was to tragically lose his life. I visit in times where I need motivation.

Born, raised and still live in Nashville. Obviously names like Sterling Marlin (and his late father, Coo Coo), Darrell Waltrip, Bobby Hamilton Sr. and Jr., Casey Atwood (though his Cup career blew to pieces), Chad Chaffin, Jeff Green and Mike Alexander, who dabbled in Cup from time-to-time, come to mind.

Then there are some names on the local level who dabbled in the Busch Series every now and again. Andy Kirby and Mark Day (who is so unpopular, he once got beaten up in-between two haulers in the Fairgrounds Speedway infield) are two of those.

Then, almost exclusively on the local level, we have Joe Buford, his legendary father Flookie, and Deborah Renshaw, whose name is sadly known for the most awful of reasons.

As Antman said, there are the Labontes and the Foyts here in Texas. There's nobody prominent in my area, maybe that's because we live in the middle of nowhere and the only track we have is a dirt track near Waco. But here's a list of other racers who were born or lived in Texas.

-H.B. Bailey
-Colin Braun
-James Buescher
-Brad Coleman
-Bobby Hillin, Jr.
-Greg Ray

I suppose I can't really think of any NASCAR guys from the Alberta area off the top of my head. There wasn't a whole lot of racing around where I was born. As for Michigan, I've witnessed Johnny Benson on short tracks and he's a monster.

Madhouse.

About 50 years, a dirt racer from my hometown named Bobby Marshman made a few attempts at the Indy 500.

1961: Started dead last, finished seventh, on the lead lap. Was made Co-Rookie Of The Year with Parnelli Jones. Drove Car #31.

1962: Started third, finished fifth. Drove Car #54.

1963: Started seventh, finished 16th, four laps down, out due to rear end problems. Drove Car #5.

1964: Started second, finished 25th, out after an oil plug problems took him out after 39 laps. Drove Car #51.

He also ran the 1964 Daytona 500 for Holman-Moody and car #06, as a teammate to Fireball Roberts, Larry Frank, and Fred Lorenzen. Started 16th, went out after 17 laps from overheating. Managed to beat Fireball Roberts and Wendell Scott, among others, and finished 35th of 46 in his '64 Ford.

Sadly, that was it for Marshman. In early December, while taking part in a tire test in Phoenix, Marshman suffered a crash which killed him.

Fred Lorenzen, Bobby Dotter and the Bettenhausens are from the Chicago area.

Danica Patrick is from Roscoe, IL, which is about halfway from Chicago to Rockford.

That's about it really.

Yeah, I forgot about Brent Sherman and all his heroic fail that saw him be the first driver that I can think of to invoke NASCAR's "Cause Five Cautions And You're Done" rule... Embarassed

...then there was his... "attempt" to qualify for Chicagoland that year... and I use the word "attempt" loosely... because I seem to recall Sherman being terribad... and then his foray into Indy Lights...
